A captain determined to get his damaged submarine to a dockyard, must take aboard five stranded female nurses during World War II.
Genre: Feature Film-Comedy
Rating: NR
Release Date: 26-MAR-2002
Media Type: DVDBlake Edwards’s delightful 1959 comedy stars Cary Grant as a World War II submarine captain whose preference for a by-the-book command reluctantly yields to certain realities. Chief among those is that Grant’s first officer (Tony Curtis, who impersonated Grant that same year in Billy Wilder’s Some Like It Hot), a shameless hustler, is better than the navy at delivering whatever supplies the ship and crew need to keep going. But when Curtis sneaks a handful of Philippine refugees and several gorgeous nurses onto the all-male sub, the skipper not only has to cool down his crew but deal with an unexpected feminine influence on ship protocol. The film is a great deal of fun, sprinkled with the director’s trademark sight gags (including one of Edwards’s best, involving a torpedo and jeep), and graced with his unmistakable lilt. Grant is in great form, his comic brilliance almost impossibly effortless. –Tom Keogh

I am just not too much of a fan of social interaction movies. As a comedy, this is a fair movie. But for a war movie, this movie lacks action. Women should like this movie much better though.

What’s the worst Cary Grant of all-time? Penny Serenade? I Was a Male Warbride? It’s probably the latter, but don’t rule out Operation Petticoat. Grant does his usual fine job; he’s not the problem. He always plays Cary Grant. But the story is ridiculous, sexist in the extreme, and largely unfunny. A pink sub saved by a bra. Tony Curtis as Sargeant Bilko. A girdle in the machine area keeping a submarine going for hundreds of miles. A slapstick ending. Well, maybe this really is the all-time worst Grant film.

WOW!ok, so i’m a massive Tony Curtis fan, but this film is actally the most bizarre, hilarious film ever! The general synopsis has been given in plenty of detail by everyone else, so i’ll just rave on about HOW funny this film really is…Now, i have to confess, my personal favourite scene has got to be the one where Tony Curtis steals a pig off some indonesian farmers farm and dresses it in a naval officers uniform and tries to smuggle it onto the submarine by saying it is drunk – thus to explain the rather unusual sounds which emante from beneath the sea mans overcoat! It just keeps snorting, and then he locks it in the loo to hide it and…. well, lets just say that those with weak bladders should stay away from this film – although in all fairness it is probably ALOT funnier at 4 am after much wine has been consumed…*coughs* lol. Well, this is a spectacularly unhelpful review – just WATCH the film! ooo! and also try and see one called “Space Truckers” which features Charles Dance as a half robot thing, uttering the immortal lines: “If i had an anus i would soil myself….” Classic.
