Death Wish / Escape From Alcatraz / Uncommon Valor (Triple Feature)

  • DEATH WISH/ESCAPE FROM ALCATRA

DEATH WISH: In this explosive story of revenge and urban violence, Charles Bronson plays Paul Kersey, a bleeding-heart liberal who has a change of opinion after his wide and daughter are violently attacked by a gang of thugs in their apartment. His daughter is raped, and his wife is raped and murdered. Bronson then turns vigilante as he stalks the mean streets of New York on the prowl for muggers, hoodlums and the like. Death Wish is a violent, controversial film that is frank and original in its treatment of urban crime and the average citizen’s helplessness in dealing with it. Herbie Hancock wrote the musical score. And watch for a young Jeff Goldblum in his film debut as one of the thugs. ESCAPE FROM ALCATRAZ: Superstar Clint Eastwood and director Don Siegal re-team for their fifth film in this fascinating account of the only three men ever to escape from the infamous maximum security prison at Alcatraz. In 29 years, the seemingly impenetrable federal penitentiary, which housed Al Capone and “Birdman” Robert Stroud, was only broken once- by three men never heard of again. Eastwood portrays Frank Morris, the cunning bank robber who masterminded the elaborately detailed and, as far as anyone knows, ultimately successful, escape. Patrick McGoohan is a superb counterpoint as the suspicious warden. Filmed on location in Alcatraz, this gritty and realistic reenactment of a true story has all the power one expects of an Eastwood/Siegel movie. UNCOMMON VALOR: Ted Kotcheff continues his First Blood fervor with Uncommon Valor. Gene Hackman stars as Cal Rhodes, a former Marine Colonel who has been getting the run-around for ten years from the government concerning the disappearance of his son and his buddies – all Marines who enlisted years prior and served in Vietnam. Rhodes’ son was last seen in Laos, where he was fighting in the war and captured as a POW. When word gets back to Rhodes that the men may still be alive and held in prison camps, but the government still has the men listed as missing in action, Rhodes decides to take matters into his own hands. Contacting an old friend, oil baron MacGregor (Robert Stack), Rhodes is granted financial backing to form his own incursion force. He assembles a crack team of men, puts them through an intensive period of training. and heads back with them into the Laotian jungles to search for the MIAs.

As expected, these discs are just a repackaging of the currently released discs. As such the transfers are still just so so and Escape from Alcatraz is non-anamorphic widescreen (that’s always a disappointment). These films deserve far better treatment a far as a proper disc release is concerned, but if you’re a fan of the movies and don’t want to wait for the next re-release of the films then it’s a good buy.

I really wanted ONLY the video…’Uncommon Valor’, but with this ‘triple feature’ being VERY close to just the purchase of only one(1) DVD, I purchased THIS item.
I watched this movie on the Dish Network & comparing the two—-the DVD is NOT all chopped-up to squeeze-it into it’s ‘alloted-time’.
‘Uncommon Valor’ is a SUPER post-VietNam movie.
Also….U can’t beat the ‘Death Wish’ series either!!
