The Burrowers

The Dakota Territories. 1879. A handful of brave pioneers maintain isolated settlements in the badlands beyond civilization. Irish Immigrant Fergus Coffey is near to winning the hand of his beloved Maryanne when she is suddenly taken from him, her family brutally abducted in a nighttime attack on their homestead. Suspicion falls immediately on hostile Indians. Experienced Indian fighters Will Parcher and John Clay form a posse and set out to rescue the kidnapped settlers, taking along a naïve teenager hoping to prove himself a man, an ex-slave looking for his place, and their ranch-hand, Coffey. But as men vanish in the night, and horrific evidence accumulates with the dead and dying, the group discovers that their prey is far more terrifying than anything human, and their prospects are far more terrible than death.

This movie is a complete waste of time and money. The whole movie is spent out in the fields where a bunch of cowboys play cheap ‘horror’ tricks on the viewer! Unknown mish-mash of actors and not much money spent on production either. What’s left to watch? What could they produce other than sucking your money and wasting your time? Skip this one.

My wife and I just watched this movie after we saw that it had been highly acclaimed by the first two reviews that were posted. I’d have to say that I would definitely disagree with the person who said that this could be the best horror movie of 2009. My wife and I both thought that this movie was just so-so and to be honest, it was actually a little boring. The movie started off slow as was stated by someone else and took a while to get to the climax, but the end wasn’t all that great and kind of left in a strange way.

What I did like about the movie was that it was well produced and was mostly shot in some really nice settings of the country how it would look like in the old days which was really nice and the cinematography was good. The acting was pretty good and the story was alright. The creatures looked kind of cool but didn’t really show up till the end and weren’t really all that freaky. Overall I would say that it deserves a 3 star rating but my wife and I both felt a bit let down afterwards. It was a decent movie though, I don’t want to bash it too much but it definitely wasn’t the 4.5 star movie that it was cracked up to be when I checked it out on amazon.

This is a low budget movie not worth your time. The acting is poor. The camera work is jumpy at times, someone was having a difficult time holding the camera still.

I know the job of advertisers is to promise a great product to make everyone rush out to buy it, and unfortunately there are those who fell for it hook, line and sinker here.

A few of the death scenes were creative, but overall the movie was just not good. Save your money, this movie will probably be on the Sci-Fi channel shortly. The creature effects are rather good, and it was refreshing to see only a partial use of disappointing CGI but it could not make it more watchable.

Overall the film does not take you anywhere. Even in the final moments, which is one of the most anti-climactic horror endings in all of horror films.

    A constantly boring creature-feature Western.

Do yourself a favor: do miss this one.

I don’t know if this is officially based on Brian Lumley’s 1974 story about “The Burrowers Beneath”, but a little bird whispered in my ear that they have very little in common, as is common these days when a film is “based on” a book (f.x LOTR; yuck). I haven’t read that story of his yet, but I hear good things about it, so I decided to check out this film when it came out yesterday. Turned out to be a great film, and probably the best horror-film of 2009! The film is set in 1879 and the end of the Amer-Indian wars is approaching, but still the bluecoats make their presence felt out on the few frontiers left. The film starts out with a family being attacked in the night by unknown forces, and from there it turns into a beautiful and intense film.

This really made me want to read the story even more, and not to ruin the film any more for potential viewers I’ll just place it in the genre of “Western horror” with the occasional love story put in there. Almost everything about this film is great; the cinematography is breathtaking, taking place in and on the outskirts of the forest and the prairie. Some of the characters were too stereotypical, though. The token black freed slave, the silent Amer-Indian and the “evil racist” aren’t exactly things we haven’t seen 10000 times before, but they might be in the book, I don’t know. That being said, I found it to be an excellent cast, with great actors such as Clancy Brown (Father Justin in “Carnivale”!) and Doug Hutchison. Interestingly, it also contains quite strong references to ethnic conciousness among Euro-Americans as well, not only among every other imaginable people. Let’s hope that sets a new trend, God knows we could surely use it these days!

Highly recommended for all lovers of horror, Western, the great outdoors and generally just an intense movie. It is a bit violent after a while, but generally I loved the film, and the creatures are quite scary. 5 stars, without a doubt.
