Droopy, a detective basset hound, lulls the bad guys into a false sense of security by acting slow and dumb when in actual fact he is a genius. The shrewd Droopy always outwits his enemies! Droopy Dog was a low-key animated movie character created by Tex Avery at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in 1943, this mournful deadpan witty Basset hound detective who spoke in a jowly monotone voice and, though he didn’t look like much, was shrewd enough to outwit his enemies – the conniving Butch the Irish bulldog and the thieving, nasty wolf and English Fox.

DVD Features:
Documentaries:“Droopy and Friends: A Laugh Back” Â – a documentary retrospective featuring the highlights of Tex Averys iconic character and band of regular misfits, which made the collection so memorable and dear to our hearts. Â Peppered through the featurette will be moments reflecting on Texs early days, from inspiration, to his passions as an artist, entertainer and eventual auteur.
Gag Reel:‘Doggone Gags” – a montage of great moments from the Droopy series, culled together in the fashion of a gag reel.

Frederick “Tex” Avery directed some of the funniest cartoons ever made, but he relied primarily on situations and moving graphics, rather than on the personalities of familiar characters. Droopy, the phlegmatic basset hound, was one of the few characters Avery used regularly: His low-key presence was the perfect counter to the extreme takes, fast cuts, frenetic action, and general mayhem going on around him. Avery is also noted for “self-reflexive gags:” the characters know they’re in a cartoon and often comment on the fact. In “Dumb-Hounded,”a sprinting wolf cuts a corner too sharply, skids past the sprocket holes at the edge of the film, and onto the blank screen. Droopy frequently turns to the camera and comments, “You now what? I’m happy.” Some of the later films in the collection, made by animators Dick Lundy and Michael Lah, lack Avery’s manic panache. The last cartoons in the collection were designed for the CinemaScope format: Droopy’s pudgy form looks lost in those vast frames, and the flattened graphics pioneered by the UPA studio distort his rounded shape. But those are minor caveats. Fans have waited impatiently for Tex Avery’s seminal cartoons to be released on DVD in the US, and this collection is a must-have for anyone interested in animation.(Unrated, suitable for ages 6 and older: cartoon violence, alcohol and tobacco use, risqué humor) –Charles Solomon

I bought this dvd set cause I remember having seen Droopy cartoons when I was a kid thirtysome years ago. So last weekend I put them into the DVD player, sat in frot of the TV with my son and I could not believe my eyes! These cartoons are so passe! They don’t make sense, characters get their heads and stomachs blown away after which they trodded on and away happily. I swear I feared my son could get funny and harmful ideas from these cartoons.. I hated them, thought they were dangerous to have kids watch and I removed them from our cartoon collection immediately..

Well, I loves these, but will have to pass. 1st, it’s not the complete Tex Avery set as was released in France. 2nd, the French set was heavily edited and is missing several episodes so it wouldn’t suprise me if the same was done here in a country which is far more “PC”. 3rd, the French set wasn’t restored because MGM/Turner didn’t think it was cost-effective which means that it’s going to be Laser Disc quality at best because that’s the last time it was restored. Basically, I can’t imagine that they will go to the trouble and expense it would take in order to do this right in a country which doesn’t tollerate a true past (unless it’s currently considered to be a plesant past). On top of that they are trying to break this down into multiple sets to soak us for more money. No thanks MGM, I’ll keep my Laser Discs and enjoy ALL of the episodes in an uncut manner. Go rob some other sucker.

I have to agree with Mr. Bozzo. Warner Brothers should release all of Tex Avery’s works. I swear to you I have seen so many movies and TV shows with cutting edge graphics and none of them can keep me awake. They should use all those computer graphics to animate some open eyes for me. Tex Avery put alot of emotion and life into his characters. Get this people. His characters had character. It is refreshing to come upon these cartoons in a world where every character is summed up within the first 10 seconds of a show by crossing their arms. They bore. I snore.

Avery’s cartoons were even more fast paced because not only was every character doing something but the characters had completely different personalities almost to the opposite ends of the spectrum. He was a genius with even the slightest emotions. I laughed my bush off to Deputy Droopy and throughout the cartoon Droopy was gagged and tied to a chair. It was pure hysteria and there are times you just give up thinking because you’re laughing so hard. I thank Warner for releasing these pieces but let’s not put Whoopi Goldberg on these like you did with my Tom and Jerry DVD. My rib cage curled foward when I saw that. Last Christmas I treated myself to a collection of all of Mr. Avery’s MGM cartoons by purchasing them from Europe. Thank God they were all in English because a huge part of the experience is the sound.

Looking forward to the Droopy set, and am hoping that the Wolf will eventually make it to DVD as well. He is my all time favorite cartoon character.
