Genre: ANIMATIONHorse lovers young and old will celebrate this utterly enjoyable and marvelous-looking animated film. The titular stallion runs free in the Cimarron (New Mexico) wilderness until a series of men try to master the proud horse, leading to adventures through a U.S. Cavalry fort, Native American settlements, and a railroad camp. Despite a heavy dose of political correctness and realism (the animals don’t talk; we only hear Spirit’s internal monologue, voiced by Matt Damon), directors Kelly Asbury and Lorna Cook give their hero many only-in-a-movie moments, including an action sequence rivaling any of Rambo’s escapes. The stirring mix of 2-D and 3-D animation is absolutely stunning and aptly fueled by composer Hans Zimmer’s synthesized score. The film earns one demerit for ’80s rocker Bryan Adams’s abundant songs–a different singer could have brought more to the film. Rated G but there is some rough treatment of horses shown, so nix the sensitive preschoolers. –Doug Thomas

I love horses, but this movie was horrible. The horses had EYEBROWS!!!! That was enough to make me want to leave the movie theatre immediately. I couldn’t believe how fake Rain looked, a tan mane and tail? What about those blue eyes? Other insane things like the men making the horses pull the train engine up the mountain, the cimarron herd not moving on and getting another lead stallion but just standing there crying their eyes out for poor lost Spirit. And what about that violence??? Is Spirit invincible or something? He first gets attacked by a mountain lion, then pulled down part of a mountain with a rope around his neck, ridden by tons of people crashing left and right in the corral, tied to a post for three days without food or water, then ridden again and nearly broken, crashing through a fence, knocking a man on the head with his head, then later goes over a waterfall trying to save Rain, and finally, forced to push a train locomotive up a mountain with about 50 other horses. Lets not even talk about the songs, they weren’t bad, it was just the singer who should be shot! Don’t waste your money on this movie, it’s not worth it!

Okay, let’s bite the bullet and start off with the basic truth–this is, quite possibly, THE worst animated movie. Ever.
I haven’t seen one worse!
The reasons? Well, several:
1)STORY-ridiculous lies. I don’t even want to discuss it.
2)ANIMATION-horrible. In trying to make the characters both horses and people, they succeed in doing neither.
3)MUSIC-you know, it’s insulting to call what they put into this movie “MUSIC”.
That pretty much sums it up. For those of you who want it clearer:
Disney pwn-zors this junk!!

I hated this movie! I went to see it expecting it to be a nice story. So, a horse gets kidnapped and gets back home-BIG WHOOP! It wouldn’t happen. The plot was bland and too politically correct for my taste. Horses aren’t that smart, either. They wouldn’t know that railroads would be built in their territory. And what is Spirit? A super horse? Horses are strong, but they’re not James Bond. Besides, these horses had eyebrows and they whinnied too much. The “wild and free” thing is sentimental and insipid junk! WORST MOVIE EVER!!

This is quite possibly the worst animated feature I’ve seen in awhile. Not only are you subjected to a simplistic, unresearched, unrealistic, and predictable storyline, the constant Bryan Adams music is enough to make anyone want to run from the room screaming. If your looking for a few hours of total torture or something get rid of unwanted company this is the movie to see.

We saw this movie in a theater. It was nearly impossible to follow the movie due to so many children crying and horrified parents standing and dragging their children out of the theater. This movie contains scenes with guns, shooting and killing, intense chase scenes, nasty soldiers and a seemingly dead horse that threw the 7 yr old next to us into hysterics. Spirit may look like a cute horsey movie for the little ones, but it is entirely innapropriate for the younger set. If you’re old enough that the violence and guns don’t bother you, you’ll probably find the movie insipid anyways. I have no idea who the producers of Spirit thought would enjoy it… no one we know did.
