  • IRON MONKEY BLU-RAY (BLU-RAY DISC)

With sensational, nonstop martial arts excitement supplied by the acclaimed choreographer of THE MATRIX and CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON, IRON MONKEY is the spirited tale of a mysterious and mythical Chinese legend — now with pristine picture and theater-quality sound on Blu-ray Disc. In a desperate and unjust land, where government corruption rules the day, only one man — known as the Iron Monkey — has the courage to challenge the system and fight back. Under the shadow of night, in the silence before dawn, he fights to give hope to the poor and the oppressed. Although no one knows his name or where he comes from, his heroism makes him a living legend to the people — and a wanted man to the powers that be. Presented by Quentin Tarantino — it’s the exhilarating action adventure critics everywhere have called one of the greatest martial arts films of all timeSince the late 1800s, the real-life Cantonese patriot Wong Fei-hung has evolved into an icon of Chinese pop culture, a sort of Asian Davy Crockett. He’s been a central figure in Hong Kong cinema since the 1950s, most recently in Tsui Hark ‘s Once Upon a Time in China series. In this thrilling 1993 adventure directed by Yuen Woo-ping, we meet Wong as an earnest boy traveling with his upright pugilist father (Donnie Yen) and drawing inspiration from the activities of the benevolent masked bandit known as the Iron Monkey (Yu Rong-guang). The sheer physical prowess of the stars is often flabbergasting, and the action set pieces (especially an interlude atop a set of “Chinese poles”) are staged for maximum dynamism. In effect, this is a powerful combination of the older, Baltic style of kung fu action and the newer body-slamming style pioneered by Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung. This is a perfect martial arts picture to screen for any genre skeptics in your midst. –David Chute

This is not a cool film. Watch a real kung fu movie; watch a Bruce Lee flick.

I thought this movie was horrid! There were people having sex with monkeys! There were many times when the monkey pulled out his IRON rod and waved it tauntingly in front of your face! This is not theatre! This is east fornication propaganda! There is one scene when a little boy is involved with beating other men with his “stick”!

I have seen several martial arts movies through the years and Iron Monkey has to be one of the cheesiest movies I have ever seen. The fight scenes are noticeably speed up, the dubbing is absolutely terrible and incredibly corny and the “special powers” (or whatever you call the cheesy flying and humanly impossible punching and kicking ability) is so overused that it becomes laughably absurd. This movie is definitely not up to the standards of Yuen Woo-ping’s other movies he has choreographed and wastes the talents of the very talented stars of the movie.

Having heard that “Iron Monkey” was suppose to be the next “Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon” I was rather excited. Yet upon seeing this movie I found that aside from the dazzeling martial arts fights there was no other eason to watch it. The plot, paper thin as it was, focuses on a masked hero that steals from the corrupt rich lords of a provincial chinese city to give to the poor and oppressed. The side line of another martial arts master, whose son is imprisoned by the loval governor, is forced to find this masked hero and kill him. Alirght the stage is now set for marvelous fight scenes, although most of them are quite rediculous. This film honestly feels more like a episode of the 1960′s TV SERIES “Batman”. From the rediculous production values, terrible acting, and the fact that no one could possible take this film seriously, all cause “Iron Monkey” to be a whole lot of style and zero substance. Only the most avid Hong Kong film fans are going to derive any enjoyment out of this film.
