For what is arguably the best musical made in the last 25 years, it’s a crime this was brought out like this and not released simultaneously on blu-ray.
As most of us know, the real power of blu-ray is the soundtrack, and this is one that definitely deserves uncompressed sound. Quite honestly, I have NO idea what they were thinking about in releasing this now (two years ago, before BD won the war, this might have been welcomed).
As it is I would recommend that most folks stay well away from this in the hopes it will encourage La Belle Streisand to make this the first BD release of her many wonderful films. We’ve waited this long, might as well wait until it’s done right.

The one star is not for the movie, but for Amazon’s treatment of customers who pre-ordered this title at $8.99. A cancelation notice went out in Jan. 09 that the order was canceled. It’s apparent why, as they’ve re-listed the DVD at $19.99. You can still get it from DeepDiscount and other sites in the $11 range.

I was so happy to find Yentl available at $8.99, for pre-order, when I was doing my Christmas shoppping that I ordered 2 copies right away. Even though it was not available for shipment until February 9th, I checked my email and to my extreme disappointment, found that Amazon had cancelled my order.
They even had the audacity to provide a link to the now higher-priced copy for sale! What happened to the advertised pre-purchase price guarantee?!? Greed. They saw the opportunity to gouge their customers, so instead of ordering the single disk version, they copped out with an over-priced 2 disk set.
In the past 12 months, I have spent several thousand dollars on their site. No more–I will take my business elsewhere from now on. Hopefully, to one that honors it’s “guarantees!”

This film is quite simply the worst bomb of all time. The plot is so ghastly that when you describe it to people they think you are kidding. This is a horrible film, and if I had to place bets I would bet that in all history no one has ever gone back to see it twice.
The plot is about a woman marrying another woman while pretending to be a man. I swear to God. Streisand plays the lead, and she is as unappealing as anything you can imagine.
You cannot make this stuff up.
Run, don’t walk, away from this bomb.

I have waited for this movie to come out for almost 20 years. When I saw it was released I was so excited. The day it arrived I had to watch it right away. The DVD was defective complete with skips and broken video. I could see on the back of the DVD there were defects and decided to get a replacement DVD. It arrived today and had the same problems. I know it is not my DVR since I use it every day. I can’t say how disappointed I am. I wish I could complain to the manufacturer. I don’t know if I dare try to order another one, but I really want this movie.
