It’s time to learn how to “Monkey Dance” and do the “Shakey Shakey. Ever wonder how to handle a “Hot Potato” or make a “Fruit Salad”? From way “Down Under” comes the #1 children’s entertainment name in Austrailia -THE WIGGLES! Murray, Jeff, Anthony and Greg will have children singing, laughing and grooving to funny tunes about numbers, food and favorite animal friends. Joining them in this ultra-hip, live-action video are special guests Dorothy, Wags, Henry and Captain Feathersword. Millions of Brit and Aussie kids can’t be wrong – this fabulous foursome is the hottest musical import since John, Paul, George and Ringo! SONGS Hot Potato D.O.R.O.T.H.Y. The Down Under foursome sings about mashed bananas and hot potatoes, dances with the energy of fitness instructors, and makes mild attempts at being educational. (Three of the four met while studying early childhood education.) Their stab at multiculturalism results in the Jewish song “Havenu Shalom Alachem.” Joining them are a big green dinosaur named Dorothy (seem familiar?), Henry the giant purple octopus, Wags the Dog, and a man in a pirate suit called Captain Feathersword. The songs are catchy, the dancing vigorous, and the outfits colorful approximations of the uniforms worn by the original crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise. A couple of the haircuts look like they might have been acquired on the spaceship as well. The 15-song video runs 33 minutes long and claims to be appropriate for ages 1-8, but will most likely appeal to preschoolers and kindergartners. –Kimberly Heinrichs

We were so excited to get this video based off the promo we saw on a Barney video. That promo song was the only one our child liked on the whole video! There are even some finger puppet videos that were such scary imitations of the real singers that my son got scared and started to cry! Then we find out that we cannot return the video because we have opened it. What a waste! We were looking for a fun music/dance video for those days we can’t go outside, and ended up with a video that my son is scared to watch at all!

I purchased this one because my 22 month old loves the “hot potato” song, and usually all of the wiggles songs are pretty entertaining – except the stupid high-speed singing puppets. I thought the dvd player was going nuts but it was just the song. Would not recommend this dvd.

Despite their nearly non-existent educational value, my very bright 2-year old, who normally could care less about what’s on television, absolutely adores the Wiggles. Specifically, he loves the song Hot Potato. Sure, he’ll sit through a fair amount of the other songs on the Yummy Yummy DVD, but for him it’s all about Hot Potato. I wish I knew why.

My son’s Wiggles infatuation is entering its third month. If I thought it was doing any harm, I’d put a stop to it, but he’s not turning into a couch potato, he rarely watches more than 15 minutes at a time, and he honestly loves these goofy songs. My wife and I, on the other hand, fall asleep with these songs in our heads. They pop into our heads the second we wake up. We hum them in the hallways and in the car. I’m confident he’ll outgrow this fascination, but I fear four our sanity in the meantime.

Here are some observations from a Wiggle-weary parent who has seen this DVD more than any sane person should.

    1. Would it kill these guys to throw in some songs about the alphabet or counting? If you’re going to have such a magnetic pull on toddlers’ attention, don’t you owe it to them to try and educate them a little?

    2. What exactly does Anthony bring to the group? He almost never plays an instrument, and from what I can tell Greg is the only real singer. He doesn’t even have a cool disorder like Jeff’s narcolepsy to fall back on.

    3. Why on Earth do I care about Anthony’s talents in the first place? That’s a sign that it’s too late for me, isn’t it?

    4. Do you think this is what Murray had in mind when he plugged in his first electric guitar? I bet he wanted to be Angus Young, and now look at him.

    5. If Henry was any kind of real octopus, he’d have dragged the Wiggles down to a watery grave by now.

    6. If Dorothy were any kind of real dinosaur, she’d have finished off the Wiggles for making her do all the yard work, and then gone after that purple freak Henry.

    7. If Captain Feathersword were any kind of real pirate, he’d have made the Wiggles walk the plank…after they cooked him up a batch of crunchy munchy honeycakes. From what I’ve seen, he’s not even pirate enough to qualify for one of those paper hats they give away at Long John Silvers.

    8. Wags the Dog…OK, I have no problem with Wags, largely because he doesn’t sing.

    9. Those Wiggle Puppets are just not right. Seriously, you can’t tell me those aren’t the result of ingesting massive amounts of illegal substances. Psychedelic backgrounds, techno beats, and creepy-eyed puppets just don’t mix.

    10. Greg and Anthony could probably, after lots of therapy, be gradually integrated back into society. I’m afraid there’s no hope for Jeff and Murray though.

I’m venting, I know. But I can’t be the only parent who wishes they had never heard of the Wiggles, can I?

Although my 2 year son loves The Wiggles, the “Yummy Yummy” video is not that great. If you have “Wiggle Time” then don’t waste your money with “Yummy Yummy.” There are only 2 or 3 songs that are good, like “Fruit Salad” (which is also in “Wiggle Time”) and “Cruchy Munchy Honey Cakes.” And like a previous reviewer stated, the “Shalom” song really doesn’t fit.
Second, they added in the video these goofy creepy-looking puppets that are suppose to look like the Wiggles themselves and when the puppets sing they have a high-pitched voice. Really annoying. And these puppets show up 2 times (that I remember) during the video. They don’t bother my son, but it doesn’t keep his attention either.
Third, the video is not that long. “Wiggle Time” is longer and has more songs. And some of the songs on this video are the same ones on “Wiggle Time.”
And finally, my son loves the Wiggles but my husband can’t stand them (of course I don’t buy the tapes for husband) and there is a song in the video where the Wiggles dance around like ballerinas…or as my husband says…they look like a bunch of “fairies” (to which my husband doesn’t want my son exposed to). All 3 of my boys LOVE the WIGGLES!My 1 1/2 year old even knows his colors (red, blue, yellow and purple) although if you ask him what color the sky is he’ll say “Anthony” instead of blue. The songs are great and are a great form of exercise for the kids (and Mom) We listen to the Wiggles all the time at home and in the car the songs are very catchy tunes…you find yourself singing them throughout the day. Can’t wait for more videos!
