Journey – Greatest Hits DVD 1978-1997 – Music Videos & Live Performances

Movie DVDIt will be many years before Journey’s music will be known as anything but soupy ’70s arena rock and embarrassingly overwrought ’80s pop. But that day will come: the songs and the playing are just too good for the scorn and ridicule to endure forever. Journey: Greatest Hits DVD 1978-1997 will do little, however, to hasten the band’s salvation. In fact, if it weren’t such a gift to those who love the music, a case could be made for suppressing the disc’s video content, so unimaginative is most of the directing and so damning is the attire (or lack thereof).

But even if sweaty guys running around in tight jeans and no underwear isn’t really your thing, the disc has its treats. There’s MTV nostalgia, pure and simple–”Separate Ways (Worlds Apart),” with its mimed quayside performance and strutting high-heeled model, is perhaps the quintessential “What were they thinking?” video. We also get exciting glimpses of the early band (with keyboardist Gregg Rolie passing the lead-vocal torch to newcomer Steve Perry) kicking out classics like “Feeling That Way,” “Lights,” and “Just the Same Way.” Many of the songs feature live audio as well as video, and it’s here, most notably in “Who’s Crying Now” and “Stone in Love,” that lead guitarist Neal Schon cuts loose with some extended licks. An unexpected pleasure is 1996′s heartfelt ballad “When You Love a Woman.” The guys are aging gracefully, Steve Smith’s drumming is better than ever, and the video itself boasts the most tasteful production of the bunch. –Michael Mikesell

Finally a video compliation of one of the Best bands around…Journey. It it great to look back on some of these videos with one of the best lead singers in the business. BUT it is almost unforgivable of what Steve Perry nearly did to this wonderful band. (go to http://www.esc4p3.com for an interview with Herbie Herbert the founding manager of the band for the Truth of Steve Perry- its a must read for any true Journey fan.)Now we have a new lead singer Steve Augeri who is just as capable of leading this great band and i cannot wait for their new album to be released. I have been a fan of thiers since 1979 and my first concert of theirs was in 1983 in Philadelphia were Send Her my Love was taped- and it was just incredible. So this video is a great look back upon their wonderful success but Steve Perry is gone and wont be back…so let us Look in to the Future with Steve Augeri and the band because the Journey Continues on and on and on….and what a bright future it seems to be for such a deserving band. If you havent seen them See them now for they are even better than the old line up, and Pick up ARRIVAL thier best album in years. Dont Stop Beliven!!!

Thank You Steve Perry for this project. (See interview at melodicrock.com). It’s wonderful to see clips from the past. Neal Schon displays great guitar work as always. Neal is one of the best guitarists around. (Check out his FRO!). Keyboardist Gregg Rollie sings and plays with perfection. Remember the way Gregg and Steve sang together? Jonathon Cain is good also. Aynsley Dunbar and Steve Smith carry the bands beat and do so very well. I give the edge to Aynsley. Ross Valory is the only bass player (Except for a stint with The Storm along with Gregg Rolie and Steve Smith). Now, let’s place credit where it’s due. Steve Perry is and always will be Journey. Steve Perry may had diffrences with the band, but he was the leader. (Sorry Steve Augeri, you are not Journey and don’t belong). This DVD reminds me of how great Journey was. It’s a shame that Steve Perry and Gregg Rolie are gone, and the direction the band has turned to to playing bubble gum music. As you watch and listen, you will agree that the early music is best, and of course there is Steve Perry. Without Steve Perry, JOURNEY is nothing but a memory.

Every song on this is very good. You can even see Randy Jackson from “American Idol” on a few songs. Classic stuff here.

It’s fun to have these videos, but the interface and quality is kind of so-so.
