CreditsFar superior to any previous home-video version, the huge deluxe edition of Elvis: Aloha from Hawaii captures over four hours of footage from the King’s historic televised concert from January 1973. The main concert is presented in its entirety for the first time since its original worldwide satellite telecast, and reedited to remove the now-dated split-screen “montage” look. But that’s not all–as a prelude to the concert, the first disc includes 17 uncut minutes of the “Elvis arrives” footage (only 2 minutes of which appears in the concert film) followed by the complete rehearsal concert that took place two days before the telecast. This rehearsal, which was released separately on video as The Alternate Aloha Concert, is rougher than the official show, but more relaxed and often more satisfying musically.
Leading off disc 2 is footage of five songs (“Blue Hawaii,” “Ku-U-I-Po,” “No More,” “Hawaiian Wedding Song,” and “Early Morning Rain”), including multiple takes, recorded after the performance, four of which (“No More” was the exception) were incorporated into the American television special that was shown a few months after the live telecast. Those four songs are not included in the uncut version of the concert on disc 1, but the original version of the American television special is also on disc 2 so you can watch the concert the way you’ve always watched it for the sake of nostalgia, or you can compare it to all the other pieces you’ve seen and decide which you like better. Either way, Elvis: Aloha from Hawaii is an embarrassment of riches that’s rivaled only by its companion release, the three-disc deluxe edition of Elvis’s ’68 Comeback Special. –David Horiuchi

I thoguht Elvis was better than this. When I saw this DVD, I realized he was not an musician, or artist, and NOTHING, but just a CROWN.

This is a bad show, a boring show. It’s wind-up Elvis all gussied up like Don Ho doing a stint at the Wiki Tiki Motor Lodge. It’s the King Of The Rocking Chair, stepping about the stage like a man afraid the screw might come out of his hip replacement. He does a load of over-the-hill crooner songs, from the Perry Como, Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra songbook. Clearly Elvis knows his dope addiction has rendered him incapable of the kind of full-throttle performance he used to dash off just a few years earlier. He has the manner of a guy just getting the thing over with, before going back to his hotel suite to blow dope. (Which is exactly what happened, according to those at hand.) Some have blamed the lackluster performance on the pressure of doing a satellite show. Certainly there was more pressure on a 22-year-old kid doing the Ed Sullivan Show live in 1957–and look what a bundle of confident energy Elvis was in those days. His voice has also thinnned and deteriorated. Gone is the soulful, raw throaty quality of the ’68 Comeback Special and the Memphis recording sessions. Elvis seems totally detached from the audience, like they’re not even there. The production team tries to liven things up with some gimmicky montages and footage of the islands. In one funny sequence, Elvis sings “Early Morning Rain” while a barechested Hawaiian guy walks along the beach on a sunny afternoon. The DVD includes the broadcast performance (original and recut), and the rehearsal show two days earlier plus some production extras that aren’t worth mentioning. Dare you to sit through all of it. Don’t the Presleys make enough off the Graceland tours without putting this one over on fans?

seemthis was originally issued AS A mono vhs tape, and maybe a laser disc in stereo, if the sound track was released onto dvd with the original quad mix’s, this would get a 10 star rating.

I read the other reviews and I must say, “Love Is Blind (and deaf)”. Many call it “This is Elvis at his very best!!!” WRONG!!! Elvis at his very best can be found on “Elvis-That’s the way it is” Special Edition and “Elvis- The ’68 Comeback Special” Deluxe Edition DVD.
I been an Elvis fan since I was 10 back in 1965 and I love the guy too, but come people, yes, Elvis was and is the best, but at times, he was one of the worst.
The sound and picture quality on this DVD set is superb, but Elvis’ voice was not, and by the way, where was Elvis anyway? All through the 2 DVDs he looks hundreds of miles away, rarely smiles, barely moves. If not for the multiple camera angles and expertise of the video engineers, there wouldn’t have been any action at all…THIS IS NOT ELVIS AT HIS BEST!
The complete “Elvis Arrives” sequence on the first disk must have been staged, the “fans” there, if any were fans at all, responded as if they were only there out of curiosity (or paid to be there). Elvis arrives looking lost, the “fans” , except for a few, were all poker faced. The Elvis, Aloha broadcast version of “Elvis Arrives” on disk 2 clearly had cheers and screams dubbed in.
The rehearsal concert, disk 1, again, where is Elvis? Hardly moves, forgets the words, he looked more like small time Elvis impersonator than the Elvis of previous years.
The post concert insert song session on disk 2, forgive me, but Elvis look and talked sedated, perhaps nervous and took something to (overly) calm him down.
O.K., for the hard core Elvis fan, this DVD set is a must, for the average Joe, it’s a waste of money, rent or borrow it.
Again, The best of Elvis is nowhere on this DVD set, it’s on the “Elvis-That’s the way it is” Special Edition and “Elvis- The ’68 Comeback Special” Deluxe Edition DVD.
