Studio: Uni Dist Corp. (mca) Release Date: 05/19/2009 Rating: NrSome televised dramas focus on families, others on singles and couples, but NBC’s Friday Night Lights, among the finest shows of the decade, takes on an entire town. As with Sports Night, minimal enthusiasm for athletics presents no hindrance to enjoyment, just an interest in the concerns of Dillon, TX’s populace, indelibly captured through authentic locations, handheld cameras, and naturalistic acting. If the off-shoot of creator Peter Berg’s feature film doesn’t look like most primetime programs, the cinematic score from Austin’s Explosions in the Sky contributes to the big-screen impression.
Since the first season, Coach Taylor (Kyle Chandler) and his wife, Tami (Connie Britton), now Dillon High principal, remain constants as they guide their charges–including 17-year-old daughter Julie (Aimee Teegarden)–through games, classes, and beyond. Where Jason Street and Smash Williams began as major players, they fade from view in the third as they figure out their post-grad futures. Instead, big-hearted garage-rocker Landry (Observe and Report‘s Jesse Plemons) emerges as the heart of the show, while his best friend, Matt (Zach Gilford), reaches out to his estranged mother, Shelby (Kim Dickens), for help when his grandmother’s deteriorating mental condition becomes too much to bear.
If everyone has financial struggles of some kind, new quarterback JD. McCoy (Jeremy Sumpter) shares no such concerns. By the end of the season, however, his controlling father, Joe (D.W. Moffett), will go too far. And after a misguided move into criminal intrigue during the second year, Lights avoids any similar missteps this time around, and the entire cast rises to the occasion, including Taylor Kitsch (Riggins), Minka Kelly (Lyla), and Adrianne Palicki (Tyra), who portrays the show’s trickiest character, a self-obsessed senior who takes advantage of Landry whenever it suits her needs. Extras include deleted scenes and insightful commentary from writer/producer Jason Katims. –Kathleen C. Fennessy

FNL is not your run of the mill teen drama. Most teen dramas are siily, poorly acted(One Tree Hill, The OC or Dawson’s Creek)and typically cliche. FNL has superior writing and acting and is addictive to say the least. Season three almost did’nt happen and each week I viewed it I was so thankful to NBC and DirectTV. Wow! I guess there isn’t millions of viewers who agree with this but just because FNL does’nt appeal to the masses doesn’tn mean it is not tv at it’s best. Quite the opposite. It is a little gem of a show that alot of people have’nt given the time to watch because they would think it is a teen drama and be turned off by that. It is a matter of ignorance. People just don’t know. Once you tune in to FNL you realize it is a very deep show and really, in my opinion, a family drama. We can’t say that about many shows on television today. I believe having it show on Friday nights has been a mistake for NBC. Alot of people watch movies on Friday nights and leave their tv viewing for the rest of the week. My family has been one of those that don’t ever tune into tv on Friday evenings and most of the time I hate Friday night shows, all channels. FNL is the one exception. If you are looking for an entertaining experience that is dramatic, heartfelt and superior to all other shows, watch Friday Night Lights. I also love the fact that the series is very affordable when it comes out on DVD. Alot of fans are complaining about the DVD package but there are’nt many series that go for under twenty bucks! That is fabulous! FNL rules.

I also agree with everyone here that this is a great show and worthy of purchase of the DVD. Because I have purchased both Season 1 and Season 2.
However, I have heard that the DVD release for season 3 will be the edited versions that were shown on NBC, and not the extended versions shown on DirecTV. I also heard that their will be changes in Music.
I do not know if any of this is true, but I was wondering if anyone else has heard these rumors.
