The acting in this depiction of the Book of Matthew is not very good.

The actor who portrayed Jesus doesn’t look at all like Jesus.

This film has good intentions and is accurate though.

I also have suspicions that some of this film was dubbed. In the Beauitudes scene, The motions of Jesus’ mouth do not correspond with his speaking.

As much as I would like to recommend this movie, I have to admit it is not one of the best movies of Jesus life. It does follow the text of Matthew’s gospel essentially word for word, which is, at times, a useful tool.

That said, the acting is mediocre. Bruce Marchiano as Jesus is a flop. He just doesn’t pull it off convincingly. I often teach a class where I show people clips from different Jesus movies. Marchiano’s poor acting often evokes laughter in the group.

If you what the best Jesus movie ever done, nothing beats Zeffirelli’s TV mini-series Jesus of Nazareth.

The two other parts to this series, Acts and John, are done very well.

If you think it’s going to be as good as the Gospel of John, don’t be surprised when it’s not. I guess it was dumb of me to think that because this one was made like 10 years before John, but I guess I didn’t expect cheesy acting and bad screen writing (Jesus is a smiley white guy). Matthew is a great book, but you can tell budget affected this dvd’s quality. I didn’t even finish it.

It’s a beautiful production which needs to be shared. You get a different picture of a very human Jesus. Own this and decided to give this to each of our children/grandchildren as a gift.
