Survivorman

Imagine being stranded in the most extreme environments on earth for seven days – completely alone with virtually no supplies. How could you possibly survive? With no support crew and operating the camera himself, survival expert Les Stroud tackles that question as he tests himself in the toughest types of wilderness, ranging from the desert to the Arctic. Among his adventures, he battles life-or-death situations – the aftermath of a winter plane crash, abandoned in the mountains, lost at sea and much more. It took me about 3 minutes to get disgusted with this show. He was walking in a beautiful jungle and grumbling about how “nightmares were plagueing him” and that he was “constantly dreaming of being in a pleasant place” … WHAT?! Do you mean a pleasant place like the shopping center where you bought that $200 dollar Columbia-brand jacket you were wearing? What is unpleasant about walking around in a thriving, living forest? Would you rather be in a clearcut wheatfield? What an idiot … Why do all these “survival” shows have to be based around how horrible it is to be outside?

If people want a realistic view of what it is like to live in the woods, check out books by Doug Peacock (who lived for decades with grizzly bears — illegally camping in national parks and filming them) or perhaps a book about a native tribe (check out Turnbull’s “The Forest People”) that lives in the woods and considers it their *home* rather than a “horrible place” just because they don’t have a North Face store …. both of these books are about people who live in the woods for much longer periods (decades or their entire lives) and they enjoy it. It’s only idiots like this that never get to know the forest that see it as their enemy.

Les Stroud, survival expert, takes us to nine extreme environments, from the Arctic to the Desert, from the Mountains to the Sea. He shows us the good, the bad and, sometimes, the ugly. I enjoyed most of the episodes. I like it when he debates the myths – does moss only grow on one side of the tree? Should you eat snow? Without a camera crew, without any way to get access to outside help, he has to last for seven days in the wild. And most of the time seems to do a great job of it.

But other times he will do something completely unplanned and stupid. For example, he was on the shore of Latin America, doing OK, but decided to go inland. He got lost, bitten by every insect alive and ended up following a river back to the sea anyway. Why? Because that’s the best place to look out for passing boats and civilization. Then WHY leave the beach in the first place? Also, when compared to Man Vs Wild does not seem to dish out as many facts. You can watch an episode, and while it is amazing to see, come away with very little useful information.

All credits goes to the local people, they are the one who are behind his every move, they are his backbone and guide. In real life there is no teacher for survival.

Imagine being dropped off in the wilderness with no map, no phone, no food. Now imagine having to get back to civilization in a set period of time and having to lug around 50 pounds of camera equipment to film this little escapade. This is what you get with “Survivorman.”

Les shows you how you how a pro can survive in the wild. Very interesting stuff! If you or I were dropped off in the wilderness, the story would likely have a different ending, but Les makes it look easy.

This is very entertaining. I also like “Man Vs. Wild”
