Deep inside, you know you’re him. Curb Your Enthusiasm – it’s the HBO hit comedy series starring Larry David as…Larry David! Each half-hour episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm features verité-style footage of David (playing himself) at home, at work and around town, as he gets into predicaments with fictional and real-life personalities.

Throughout Curb Your Enthusiasm‘s fifth season, HBO’s master of passive-aggression went in search of his roots. In the sixth, Larry returns to his old tricks–to the relief of fans who felt the show was losing its way. As usual, most scenarios revolve around problems unique to neurotic millionaires. Larry’s voice of reason, wife Cheryl (Cheryl Hines), continues to save him from himself (when she can). This time, the 10-episode arc turns to Roots when the Davids take in the Blacks, a family of African-American hurricane evacuees, including Loretta (Vivica A. Fox) and her brother, Leon (an uproariously profane J.B. Smoove). Naturally, “L.D.” offends other groups along the way, like an Asian gentleman (“The Anonymous Donor”), a chemotherapy patient (“The Lefty Call”), a deaf woman (“The Rat Dog”), and tennis-player-turned-comedian John McEnroe, a group unto himself (“The Freak Book”). During the year, Larry also tangles with an X-rated dessert, an unsympathetic senator (Rep. Barbara Boxer as herself), an inebriated chauffeur (Toby Huss), the infinite superiority of Ted Danson, and the usual games of one-upmanship with Jeff Greene (Jeff Garlin), Richard Lewis (himself) and Marty Funkhouser (Bob “Super Dave” Einstein, brother of director Albert Brooks).

Since Curb Your Enthusiasm takes its inspiration from David’s real life, the big news arrives when Cheryl, a character based on environmental activist Laurie David, walks out on him. Then their friends pick sides. Thereafter, things really start to go downhill, resulting in some of Larry’s funniest faux pas ever–until R&B vocalist John Legend steps in to save the day. Not literally, but his soulful singing sets the scene for the surprisingly sweet finale. Extra features include a live conversation between David and Susie Essman, a sixth year featurette (“On the Set”), and a gag reel. –Kathleen C. Fennessy

This is the worst show ever produced – taking advantage of Seinfeld fans misguided loyalty, and the wrongful thought, that since this is made by Larry Davis, it has to be good… it don’t!

After a couple of episodes (if you actually get this deep into it before throwing away the dvd’s) you realise that the dialogue actually follows the same structure and speech patterns that Seinfeld does – only this show has no proper actors or comedians to deliver the lines.

It’s stiff, slow, tries to hard but keeps on failing, annoying, embarrassing and quite frankly a disaster.

I have no idea who these guys are that gives this 5 stars, but they have to be family of Larry’s.

I bought the entire series based on the stupid 5 star reviews and the fact that I too thought that ‘Larry Davis, this can only be good’ – but I’ve had to through the dvd’s out without even seeing all the episodes.

    Waste of time and money!!!

This season of Curb is by far the worst yet. Larry David clearly did not spend the time and energy needed to compare with seasons 1-4. The show took a hard left political turn as it struggled to have the same quality and humor as in past seasons. Too over the top and trying too hard to be funny, not to mention too political, are the main problems. Very dissapointed in the season and hope Larry gets back to what made him successful in future seasons.

As much as I love Curb I know every episode can’t be a winner but this is by far the worst season.

However the series’ only BAD season.

A show built on imperfection is not easy to criticize but the imperfections suffered here go far beyond typical misunderstandings, wacky quirks and Jeff Garlin’s unfortunate gigantic head.

What bothers me is how well the season began in comparison to most episodes that followed.

There is no obvious “This is gonna SUCK!” moment but a gradual laziness as plot themes and characters become so redundant I would not be surprised if this latest DVD doesn’t come with a paint-by-numbers kit.

Yeah, bad joke. Too easy. Should try harder.

    NOW DO YOU UNDERSTAND?

The addition of the Black family gives the season a great new dynamic but also seems as if Larry is promoting a kinder, gentler “Larry” and who wants that? Aside from these new characters the plots rely heavily on past episodes and even the dialogue seems more rehearsed or dare I say “scripted”.

Same reason I found one particular exchange between Larry and Richard Lewis in the season closer so wonderful as Larry elaborates on a certain pronunciation and the two share the joke – almost out of character (if possible).

My favorite moment of season 6.

Speaking of being out of character, what’s with the Cheryl plot?? “Hmm, let’s make Larry good and Cheryl evil!”.

    Hmmm.

Most disappointing, the last moments of the final episode are so tightly strung together in a desperate move to wrap up the season I waited through the closing credits hoping to see the REAL ENDING.

I am comfortable with The Larry Character being predictable if the story calls for it but repetition is another story.

The cast just go through the motions as Susie screams, Cheryl is even more schizophrenic, Super Dave grows annoying and Jeff is just kinda there without any real purpose.

Remember when Larry David quit Seinfeld and the show took a noticeable turn into mediocrity? Same here…only Larry hasn’t left.

Will I buy it? Of course! It’s Curb! But I deserve better.

I thought the show was going down with season 4, but season 5 was almost as good as season 3 (my favourite so far). Now, season 6 is really weak; except The anonymous donor I don’t think I’ve laughed out loud in any of the other episodes. Larry, work harder!!

i love this series, but this season was awful, although the only funny episode was the “funkhouser memorial” but i feel this episode is funny, its not worth buying this dvd for; if you are new to curb, buy seasons 1-4 they are hilarius.season 7 is coming, although i was disappointed with last season i will still watch the new season.
