On August 28, 1982, Cody Webster and a small group of schoolyard friends from Kirkland, Washington, sat anxiously in a dugout waiting to take the field for the championship game of the Little League World Series. Their focus was just about what you’d expect from any 12 year old: hit the ball, throw strikes, cross your fingers and then maybe – MAYBE – you’ll win. No American team had won a true international Little League World Series championship in more than a decade. When the Kirkland players rushed from their dugout that day they stepped onto a much bigger field than the one they saw. What they did, how they did it, and what happened to each of the players in the years that followed is a multi-faceted story – much like the diamond on which the game is played. Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Al Szymanski examines what happens to a group of childhood teammates when the high point in their life occurrs before life had really begun. This two-disc edition includes the championship game as it was broadcast on ABC’s Wide World of Sports.

Saw this story on ESPN and decided I have to get it for my nephew, who played Little League ball in Oregon, and is just starting high school there. I think every kid who plays Little League ball should see this film, if for nothing else, to make them realize that there are positive and negative consequences to almost everything in life. Too often, all that they hear or imagine are the positives. Little League is an incredible opportunity for many, often the first chance for a real “team” experience. The reality of the pressures they experience can be applied even in daily, routine Little League play. A young player doesn’t have to go to the LL World Series to understand that. I think this film can help put a lot of that pressure in perspective for your average youngster who has a dream to one day play in Williamsport on the big stage.
