I have always enjoyed listening to Bob Greene on the Oprah Winfrey show so I thought that this would be an excellent DVD. I expected some cardio accompanied by strength training and stretches. The eight week segments each lasted approximatelly ten to fifteen minutes and consisted mainly of squats, lunges, and crunches. As you continue progressing through the eight week shape up segments, he creates complicated arrangements of more squats, lunges, lifts, and squats. Sometimes the exercise was so elaborate that the movements felt awkward and I began to dread doing the segment. Another problem is that each segment begins rather quickly with the demonstrater doing the exercise full tilt. There is no explanation of how to do the exercise or how heavy a weight to use and a lot of the time the camera focused on Bob instead of the demonstrater. Sometimes the exercise was so elaborate that you would have to watch for a bit before you could perform the exercise. I continue to use the DVD because I hate wasting my money, but I am to the point of filing this DVD under G.

I purchased this video as a supplement to my workout routine, expecting the “weekly” sessions to be challenging, and last at least 30 minutes. Though my legs and arms got tired from all the lifts and lunges, I had to watch about 3 consecutive videos (which grew progressive)in order to feel like I got a thorough workout. Each weekly session is literally about 15 minutes, and seriously, what kind of results can you get with only a 15 minute workout that barely gets you to break a sweat? Each one began with a warm up and cool down too, so if you’re doing 3 in a row, all the slowing down and starting up hardly becomes effective. If you’re new to working out though, and need to take baby steps, this might be a good intro DVD for you. However, if you’re already pretty fit, and want something challenging, please don’t bother. I disagreed, however, that the video emphasized Bob too much and felt the camera were on the girls just fine. If you’re seriously looking for a total body makeover, I would suggest Chalene Extreme, which I just ordered. I am confident it’s going to provide me with the challenge level I’m looking for, but won’t be as intense (an intimidating) as P90X.

I thought this would be a great concept and opportunity for Bob Greene to motivate through each week of progress. There is very little motivational commentary and advice. A few simple diet rules at the beginning (nothing comprehensive) and then the weekly exercise program. I expected him to include motivational comments and add on additional nutritionally / diet goals each week. But nothing except for the weekly exercise programs. On the plus side, the exercise programs are short and easy to fit into your schedule. They change each week adding more challenge and variety.

I must say that I LOVE this DVD. The workouts are fast paced and progressive. Bob can be overly happy that there are a few more reps left but I love that he is there coaching me on – he’s got the best “no nonsense” approach. I also agree with the other reviewers that there are a lot of lunges (in all directions) but my legs look the best they ever have! I saw results in the first two weeks! It encouraged me to stick with the 8 week plan. (Giving up my wine in the evenings was the hardest)
Kudos to Bob Greene for rounding out his 8 week makeover with some very solid fitness. I’ve lost over 20 lbs in the 8 week time frame and use the last two workout as my maintenance routine. This one for me is definitely a keeper! It kept the promise of making my body over in 8 weeks… can’t say the same for other products that I have tried. 10 min workouts – worked for me.

The video is super fun and motivating. The exercises in particular are pretty unique; I have never seen a workout video quite like this one. The exercises are really creative and effective.
