Dark Light
Resident Evil: Apocalypse

After narrowly escaping the horrors of the underground Hive facility, Alice (Milla Jovovich) is quickly thrust back into a war raging above ground between the living and the Undead. As the city is locked down under quarantine, Alice joins a small band of elite soldiers, led by Valentine and Carlos, enlisted to rescue the missing daughter of Dr. Ashford, the creator of the mutating T-virus. It’s a heart-pounding race against time as the group faces off against hordes of blood- thirsty zombies, stealthy Lickers, mutant canines andthe most sinister foe yet. Written and produced by director of Resident Evil, Paul W.S. Anderson (Alien Vs. Predator) and directed by Alexander Witt.2002′s popular video-game-derived hit Resident Evil didn’t inspire confidence in a sequel, but Resident Evil: Apocalypse defies odds and surpasses expectations. It’s a bigger, better, action-packed zombie thriller, and this time Milla Jovovich (as the first film’s no-nonsense heroine) is joined by more characters from the popular Capcom video games, including Jill Valentine (played by British hottie Sienna Guillory) and Carlos Olivera (Oded Fehr, from 1999′s The Mummy). They’re armed and ready for a high-caliber encounter with devil dogs, mutant “Lickers,” lurching zombies, and the leather-clad monster known only as Nemesis, unleashed by the nefarious Umbrella Corporation responsible for creating the cannibalistic undead horde. Having gained valuable experience as a respected second-unit director on high-profile films like Gladiator and The Bourne Identity, director Alexander Witt elevates this junky material to the level of slick, schlocky entertainment. –Jeff Shannon

Well… Since other reviewers deem it necessary to review my review in addition to the movie itself, I suppose I should retort.

First of all I think I already alluded to the fact that the movie is based on the games. T-virus and all ensuing creations included. It was not, however, nearly as atmospheric, nor as suspense filled.

Second, all I can say is that to anyone who actually liked this mockery of the cinematic process; you are, quite frankly, a simpleton.

Forget the game it’s based on. Judging on it’s merits as a movie alone this is nothing but a trumped up B-movie. Something to have a nice MST3K session with your friends over, but certainly nothing that will go down in the Hollywood annals as “classic”. Or even good for that matter.

The acting was second rate. Milla did a passable job considering what she was given to work with, but for the most part it was over the top. Especially Jill but I’ll get to that in a moment. Of course people who go to movies for nothing more than loud bang-y noises, and lots of fast motion on the screen will love it. Plot, dialogue, pacing, and anything resembling depth are all rather meaningless to such people. As long as it appears to be good, and I emphasize ‘appears’, then they’ll like it. (Case in point: The above reviewer deiging it necessary to bring up how good the monster in the film looked in order to get across how good the movie was. Right… She also liked how one monster was included and was displeased with how another was not. Wow. Very insightful stuff from someone who likes to tell others they have no taste.)

Of course that doesn’t mean it’s good. It just means a lot of people like bad movies.

    ***orginal review***

This isn’t even a horror movie! There’s no build up of tension, no suspense. It’s a zombie-action movie.

It’s typical Hollywood: Throw as much up on the screen as fast and loud as you can, (lots of shooting and explosions YAY!) and maybe by the time the audience leaves the theater they’ll be so confused they’ll think they’ve seen a good movie. (I guess as long as it works they’ll keep doing it though.)

Also they ripped off Alien 4 (of all movies!) by supping up Alice in exactly the same manner as Ripley in said film.

This movie has nothing in common with the games (which were about atmosphere and suspense) other than the T-Virus. Coincidentally it also has nothing in common with a good movie.

If you must watch this drivel keep an eye out for Jill’s introduction scene where they immediately establish her as “One Tough Bitch”. For more discerning viewers this scene will be almost unbearably funny. Unintentionally of course. Action junkies won’t even recognize the film’s moment in which it teeters on the brink of self-parody.

This is lowest common denominator entertainment at it’s nadir.

    ***end original review***

In closing I’ll just say that I know that by giving a special edition sequel such a negative review I’m bound to get a lot of unhelpful votes. Most people checking up on the SE sequel have already decided they liked the first wretched film and are beyond help.

So keep those unhelpful’s coming. It only shows me why Hollywood keeps making crap. We live in a world where appearances are valued far more than substance. If however you’re one of the few people reading this who agree with the sentiments contained within then go pick up Return of the Living Dead for what is a clever, scary zombie flick that was well ahead of it’s time. See it and you’ll see more roots for the Dawn of the Dead remake than you’ll find in the original Romero flick.

This movie looks pretty interesting compared to the other Resident Evil. The only problem with the last movie, is that it couldn’t reach its full potential since the budget was cut short. I will admit something, Paul Anderson is good at budgeting, but he is not that great at what he does. The problem with this upcoming movie, is that it is not following what the video game had. This movie needs to have a better story line that goes a long with the movie. One of the things that bugs me, is that Jill doesn’t work along side of Alice. What I believe he should’ve done is made a diffrent story line, and put nemesis in it, but not jill, carlos, and nicolai. I believe if he would’ve stuck with a diffrent story line with diffrent people, and left nemesis in there, this would be a GREAT Movie! But see, the problem with the upcoming movie, is that first off, Nicolai is not the squad leader like he was in RE3. Why not? Why is Carlos the leader now? Also, the licker NEVER showed up in RE3, its debut was in RE2 and then they no longer were brought in. So why is the licker a main choice for this? Possibly if the budget is dephiseted? Well anyway, I will go see this movie, but I do not believe it to follow the video games like it should. But maybe Paul will make a movie revolving around Claire Redfield… That would truly be a masterpiece… But for now, we shall see what this movie shows.

I just got back from seeing resident evil. It rocked. The last scene was by far the best part. The nemisis looked awsome. They did a good job on him. The story i thought was even better than the first resident evil. And the ending blew me away. I cant wait for the next one. The only complaint i have was where mila and that guy blew up that tank too kill the warehouse with all the zombies. That was kinda stupid. It didnt make too much sense either. Other than go see it now.

I don’t play video games. Never have and perhaps never will, since I got too many things to do with my time than sit still and play games for hours, so I don’t know what are all the fuss about Nemesis and other characters from those games. I’m only interested in how entertaining this movie is gonna be and how much of MJ nudity I get again. Hehehe. Since I don’t have experience with RE games, I get to enjoy RE movies without any prejudice. In that respect, I feel pretty lucky, specially in these days, many vido-games-turned-movies are out like Tomb Raider and stuff. That actually goes to comics-turned-movies stuff too because I don’t look at those comics. Hahaha.
