Heroes: Season 2

Rejoin the epic and suspenseful phenomenon as Heroes: Season 2 arrives on DVD! Experience all the new and exciting twists of the astonishing series in this 4-disc set that includes every gripping Season 2 episode. Plus, see what could have been with exclusive bonus features that reveal the untold stories that never aired and an alternate ending to the season finale, where the fate of humanity takes an ominous turn when Peter fails to catch the vial containing the deadly virus.Don’t believe the hype: though some critics and viewers decried the sophomore season of the hit fantasy series Heroes, the core of the program remained as strong as in its debut network run. To be sure, the 2007-2008 Writers Guild strike hobbled the show, and producers stumbled by stranding two of its most intriguing characters: Super-charged Peter Petrelli (Milo Ventimiglia) is taken out of the action after being struck with amnesia, while Hiro (Masi Oka) is sent to feudal Japan, where he encounters his own idol, Takezo Kenzei (David Anders). Both are overcomplicated story arcs, even by Heroes standards, and their connection to the rest of the season occasionally requires some mental gymnastics. But the crux of the season–the Company’s development of the power-draining Shanti virus and its potentially devastating effects on both average citizens and superhumans like Niki Sanders (Ali Larter), The Haitian (Jimmy Jean-Louis) and primary villain Sylar (Zachary Quinto)–is solid, gripping material. The introduction of new characters like the lethal Maya (Dania Ramirez) and Kristen Bell as the electrically charged (in both the literal and figurative sense) Elle Bishop also up the dramatic stakes, even if their presence may require a scorecard for some viewers. In short, the few kinks in the armor of Heroes: Season 2 ultimately don’t detract from the show’s drive and vision. Season two spreads its supplemental features across all four of its discs; chief among these are commentary tracks by the cast and crew on all eleven episodes. The participating talent ranges from creator Tim Kring and stars Ventimiglia, Oka, Quinto and Greg Grunberg to composers Lisa Coleman and Wendy Melvoin, which helps to provide a wide variety of information about almost every aspect of the show’s production. Featurettes cover everything from the history of Takezo Kenzei to in-depth looks at scenes from the season, while “Untold Stories” explores storylines that were left unfinished due to the writers’ strike. The key extras are, of course, the alternate ending to the season finale (which is unfortunately revealed by the rear cover-art text) and an info-heavy sneak peek at Season 3. –Paul Gaita

Overall, a bad customer experience but a minor blocker in accessing the content.

It’s interesting though that while NBC left iTunes in a snit because Apple wouldn’t bow to their price gouging (NBC wanted to charge $4.99 per episode vs. Apple’s $1.99), and now Amazon distributes this content for exactly that price!?

I’m guessing that the UNBOX (terrible name) currently has a fraction of the users drawn by iTunes, and this play is another Apple doomsday forecast… But does anyone have educated insight?

The episodes I saw sucked (granted, I finally gave up six episodes in) and they want me to pay $26 for 11 episodes? I think I’ll sell my first season DVD on CraigsList instead and wait for a show that doesn’t feel the need to rip off the X-Men, Watchmen, and every other comic book ever written. The highly overrated first season was OK. The second season was unwatchable.

I find it hard to believe Amazon is not making it possible for MAC users to watch these shows. I guess I will stick to iTunes!

Our household made the switch from PC to Mac about a year ago. Now we’re hooked on Heroes but can’t watch the second half of season 2 because there is no way to download to the Mac. Are they kidding? Mac may be a small market, but a lot of Apple fans are in the demographic for this show. In a year of operating a Mac, this is the first time I couldn’t do something on it–so I gotta say the problem is Amazon, not the Mac.

I hope Amazon doesn’t underestimate the fervor of Mac users for their product. Once you use a Mac, you don’t want to go back. I could buy Windows for my Mac and download Heroes. However an irritation-free computing life has become important to me–probably more important than Heroes. I’m a loyal Amazon customer (and spend a good bit here) but feel strongly enough about Mac versus PC that if Amazon doesn’t correct this problem soon I will take all my business elsewhere.

All that said, Heroes is an amazing TV show–great drama and great SF. I get hooked on only about 2-3 tv shows in a decade and this is one of them!

EDITED TO ADD: These episodes are now available free on nbc.com with a small number of commercials. So no reason to buy them here anyway.

I don’t know what extra’s could possbly rate a $40 price tag for this. It’s only half a season, and a terrible one at that. Too many new characters are introduced without bothering to flesh them out, which takes time away from developing the current cast and in the end, everyone is pretty much back where they started from by the end of the season.

Season 1 was great, and works as a self contained story arc and

I do hold out hope for season 3, but season 2 isn’t even worth renting.
