The Incredible Mr. Limpet

Hailed as one of the greatest films of all time, The Incredible Mr. Limpet is a story about the wonders of imagination and the triumph of the spirit. Live-action and 2-D animation combine to tell the story of a man who longs to be a fish after he is classified by the Navy as an F4 – “too small and too weak to be a soldier.” When his dream of being a fish becomes a reality, Henry uses his underwater prowess to become the Navy’s strongest secret weapon. Ever wonder what would happen if the imaginary worlds of Bedknobs and Broomsticks and SpongeBob SquarePants were to collide? If so, chances are good you’ve yet to discover The Incredible Mr. Limpet. Starring the irrepressible Don Knotts, this 1964 family feature combines live (land) action and animated (undersea) sequences with delightful results. During World War II, Knotts is mild-mannered, spectacle-sporting bookkeeper Henry Limpet. More than anything–he’s a fish fan and a patriot. When the navy rejects him due to poor eyesight, he falls into a funk from which not even his beloved aquarium or loving–if bossy–wife can rescue him. So he makes a wish… to become a fish. Next thing he knows–he is! With a little help from a hermit crab named Crusty and the lovely Ladyfish, it’s as a talking, bespectacled fish that Limpet proves himself the war hero he always knew he was meant to be. –Kathleen C. Fennessy

This movie stinks like blue fish in a friday sheets event…Knotts, the man who looks like he should be on a milk carton, is one of the worst actors ever….His annoying voice, the way he makes those stupid, rather banal attempts at humor sicken the very soul of me, and I am a man of the cloth! He should be run the heck outta the biz, man, and sent on the road riding a super charged up bike with Babe Ruth and his baby clinging to his backside in pain, man, in pain!!!!!

This is a dated antique of a film that reminds me of my youth in my hometown…I thought I liked this movie so much I took a date on Friday and a different girl on Saturday. How stupid? This movie looks as dated as I feel. Don Knotts is corny…and Jack Weston is absolutely unlikable in this film…The actress that plays Don Knotts’ wife is such a terror you wonder why it took him so long to jump in the ocean in the first place. This movie is as confusing as a room full of lawyers licking their chops over an accident victim’s settlement…and just as entertaining.

I just read many of these reviews and have to completely disagree!

Sure Don Knotts acting is fine but many of the other actresses are just too over the top. The story line is terrible. It’s too serious to even just be able to laugh at it.

DON”T WASTE the 2 hours of your time!

And I would not recommend it for kids either. It is a PG movie. Young children would not get it and be bored. And older kids would pick up on the mixed marriage message. (Yes you should honor your marriage vows but if you grow apart just give up on the marriage.)

I liked this movie, not because of it’s plot, but because of Vladimir Tytla’s artwork on it.

Frankly the movie [stinks], but the transfer and artwork are magnificent. I found Crusty to be the only character that was any fun. I can only recomend this disc for serious animation collectors only. If you want a fun movie, go somewhere else.

This is a very good movie. It’s funny, and very original, a great take on wartime issues.

However, the only downside is that Don Knotts hardly appears in the film. Of course we have him lending his voice to Mr. Limpet as the animated fish, but we hardly get to SEE him.

I think most people will agree with me that not actually SEEING Don Knotts really hurts this film. Much like Brad Pitt or Orlando Bloom, Don Knotts is an actor more known for his striking good looks than his actual acting ability. I’ll never forget his sensual performance in “The Apple Dumpling Gang”, or his raw, animal magnatism in “The Ghost and Mr. Chicken.”

So if you’re a fan of Mr. Knotts’ work, stick to films where you can see his best asset, his amazing body.
