If you liked ALADDIN, you’ll love Disney’s THE EMPEROR’S NEW GROOVE, where outrageous comedy rules! Audiences and critics alike raved about this hilarious animated adventure. “Ebert & Roeper And The Movies” gave it “Two Thumbs Up.” Faster than you can say “Boom, baby,” arrogant Emperor Kuzco is turned into a llama by his devious advisor, Yzma, and her hunky henchman, Kronk, who want to rid the kingdom of this beast of burden. Now the ruler who once had it all must form an unlikely alliance with a pleasant peasant named Pacha. Together, Kuzco and Pacha must overcome their differences as they embark on a hilarious, “groovy” adventure that will have you howling with laughter.Originally developed as an epic called Kingdom of the Sun, The Emperor’s New Groove lost scale and most of Sting’s song score (some of which can be heard on the soundtrack) on its way to the screen. The end result is the lightest Disney film in many a moon, a joyous romp akin to Aladdin in its quotient of laughs for kids and adults. The original story centers on the spoiled teenage emperor Kuzco (David Spade), who enjoys getting the best of his Aztecan subjects. When he fires Yzma (Eartha Kitt), his evil sorceress, she seeks revenge and turns Kuzco into a llama with the help of her hunk of the month, a lunk named Kronk (Patrick Warburton). Alone in the jungle, the talking llama is befriended by Pacha (John Goodman), who has just been told to vacate his pastoral home by the human Kuzco. What’s an ego to do? That’s pretty much the story and the characters–simple, direct, fun–a Disney film on a diet. For any fan of the acidic humor of Spade, this is essential viewing. As narrator of his tale, Kuzco uses a sarcastic tone to keep the story jumping with plenty of fun asides (he even “stops” the film at one point to make sure you know the story is about him). Even better is character actor Warburton (Elaine’s stuck-up boyfriend on Seinfeld), who steals every scene as the dim-witted, but oh-so-likable Kronk. There’s even a delicious Tom Jones number that starts the film off with a bang. –Doug Thomas

This movie stars David Spade as a “llama.” Who cares about a llama? Well, he does not start out as one. The movie is about an emperor who gets a spell cast on him. This movie is lame.

First, I want to congratulate the excellent Disney animation staff for doing an incredible job at acting and moving the drawings in this movie. Some of the best I’ve seen recently from the House of Mouse.
However, among other things, this movie just HURTS. It reminds me of stale Disney animated films from my childhood (Robin Hood) when the creative direction at the Disney studio hit serious speedbumps. Notably, SO much meaningless dialogue. Serious boredom for most kids, I would think. The beats of the story, and the contrasts of characters and situations were shrouded in a haze. Also, the designs of the backgrounds and color choices made the entire film a kind of cartoony malaise of images. Why can’t Disney juxtapose designs and contrast characters, dialogue and sequences to keep the audience in awe anymore? I want the keen Disney sensabilities of Jungle Book or Little Mermaid back in full gear, not sloppy journey’s through incoherent fantasy realities beyond public perceptions or common archetypes. And on a filmic note, why can’t the story guys at Disney establish things with wide shots and sweeping pans anymore? Or use terrificly thoughtful transitions (there were a couple nice ones in GROOVE, tho)? And why is the camera always locked in some of the most boring positions that careras were set in before the age of cranes and dollies?? The flat film negating perspective (thus believable reality) is annoying for such a brilliant crew of art talents. Disney has so much possibility, but so little is used.
Overall, this film was pretty hard to watch in one sitting as scenes drug on and became self indulgent fun. But, it wasn’t anything most viewers would notice consciously. I hope the talent making the movie gets restructured around better scripts and storyboarding to raise the flag of excellence flying half mast at Disney these days.

ok. when i went into the cinema, i thought that this movie would be a good one. 1) everyone said it was amazing 2) disney movies like toy story always are not that bad but this one really disappointed me.
it irratated me. and even my younger brother almost fell asleep. it was not touching, but tried to make ppl feel sorry. and finally, i didn’t find it funny but instead, annoying.
anyways, i would say that it was not a good movie at all. nothing to expect from.

Unlike the other reviewers I do not like this Disney film as the main character is not someone you can indentify yourself with. In my opinion the love of the public for the main figure (Pocahontas, Tarzan, Aladdin, Belle, Simba, Nemo, Dorey, etc.) always is the key to the success of the film. In this film I do not have any moment I feel pity of the character or do I really get into the story. Like Lilo and Stitch this is a film very unlike Disney and in my opinion worth to be forgotten very soon.
