Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles – Original Series

TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES: SEASON 1 (DVD MOVIE)The 1987 debut season of the wildly popular Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ first animated TV series finally arrives in its entirety on this single disc. And while it’s a pleasure to have these long-unavailable episodes in DVD format, the set’s lackluster presentation and paltry extras also make it a disappointment for those hoping for a more expansive release. Volume One contains the five-episode “miniseries” that comprised the debut season and explained the Turtles’ origins; the episodes are presented with opening and closing credits, though offered as single chapters on the disc. The “bonus” material is four episodes from the series’ tenth and final season, which were largely unseen in the U.S. (though some U.K. viewers may have caught them). While interesting from a completist perspective, their inclusion clashes somewhat with the first-season episodes, as the series’ look and tone had changed considerably by this point. And when combined with the disc’s overall lack of quality picture and sound (video masters appear to have been used), Volume One represents something of a missed opportunity for TMNT fans; however, having the first season on a single disc may be an acceptable trade. –Paul Gaita

this show was great when i first watched it but now i can’t finish watching ONE episode because of the unbelelievable cheesiness of it (a giant plant? ok…)i put 3 stars because i sort of like it and sort of dont. like raph joking through the whole show?! why did he have to joke through it? and then they pretty much used all the characters for toys like usagi, casey etc.etc. i just don’t like that at all. and pretty much all the episodes of the current cartoon are scarier then anything the old show could have thrown at us!!but it was supposed to last one season anyway.

I liked this cartoon, but I find the new toon to be much more appealing. This one is all fun and games, all humor, not so good animation (but because it’s an 80′s cartoon that’s okay), and has deeply stupid villans. I hate stupid villans, it’s one of the main reasons why I had stopped watchings shows like the Power Rangers!

Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t a bad show. Last month my friends and I rented a couple of old toon tapes, and we enjoyed it a lot. It’s funny, although sometimes it crosses over into being corny, and nice to watch.

But when it comes down to which show is better, new toon or old toon…The new one is #1! I don’t understand how anyone who has seen both versions can say that the old toon is better, because it just isn’t. It’s far from it! Which is why I gave it this rating.

I am perhaps one of the most biggest fans of TMNT. Which is why I find it very hard to say what I am about to say. First of all, my review of this series is bittersweet because on one hand, i love to watch cartoons from my childhood because, and I don’t think I’m alone in this, it takes me back to a time when I didn’t have to worry about too much of anything except homework and bullies. There are may times that I say that kids today are being robbed of good cartoons like the ones people my age used to watch as kids. But on the other hand, when I watched the TMNT series from beginning to end recently I was reminded of how progressively worse this show became when the eventual commercialization of an otherwise great underground phenomenon caused it to become just a shell of it’s original concept. And believe me when I say that this is not the 24 year old man talking right now, this is the child that he once was, remembering how it felt to have to turn my back on one of my favorite cartoons because the characters I came to know and love ended up making fun of themselves by the series’ end. I mean, I look at the covers of the dvds and I see a bunch of bright colored, wacky looking, smiling swollen turtles and I ask myself, “How did it come to this?” The original TMNT were a group of rowdy, misunderstood teenegers who had to deal with their adolesence living under the streets of the city. The only reason they didn’t get out of hand was because of the discipline and training from their master, Splinter. They fought the Foot Clan, ate pizza, rode skateboards and drooled over April O’Neal all in one episode. Cool right? But somewhere down the line this all changed. Somewhere along the line they started smiling more. Somewhere along the line the Foot Clan went from formidable human being opponents to robots that fall apart at the slightest hit. Somewhere along the lines they carried their weapons but they would end up fighting with yo-yo’s, fruit, dodgeballs, pies, etc. And can someone please tell me when did they start eating pizza with toppings such as ice cream, jelly beans, and brussel sprouts? I guess for nostalgic reasons I bought this because like I said before, it took me back to a simpler time in my life. But if you ask me, the new TMNT show has taken the turtles and their story back to it’s roots and anyone who is a true fan of the TMNT will appreciate a decent cartoon finally getting to air on saturday mornings. Well, I gotta go before the Vanilla Ice Ninja Rap song gets stuck in my head.

True, I don’t have this on dvd yet and I do intend on getting it when it is released but I don’t feel this is the best version of the Ninja Turtles story. This version struck me as slightly goofy and childish compared to the movies, comics, and the new cartoon (although it’s much better than the SABAN live action show, The Next Mutation!). I loved the movies and deeply love the new toon and I’m NOT a so called “NOOB” to the Ninja Turtle fanbase, I’ve loved the Ninja Turtles since I was a little kid. I’m 17 now ( I’m not a customer here my parents are so I had to write my review through this) and I look back on the old toon with a lot less respect than I did when I was 5.
I’ve read summaries for the old toon episodes and was disappointed with how goofy it seemed, but this won’t stop me from getting a copy of the dvd when it’s released.
