Dark Light
Spriggan

Monstrous half-human cyborgs face off against Earth’s ultimate defenders, the secret organization known as ARCAM and their elite agents, the Spriggan in an epic duel with the future of our species as the prize! Will we become slaves to these cyborgs or will freedom prevail?Fast paced, violent, and loud, Spriggan uses a combination of drawn and computer animation to deliver the kind of slam-bang thrill ride Final Fantasy only promised. The convoluted plot, based on a manga series by Hirotsugu Kawasaki and Yasutaka Ito, mixes elements from Raiders of the Lost Ark, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Akira, and Universal Soldier. Yu Ominae (voice by Christopher Patton) is a Spriggan, a member of an elite corps of biologically engineered warriors created by the secret organization ARCAM, who finds himself involved in a baroque adventure centered on the newly discovered Ark of Noah. The Ark is actually an extraterrestrial vehicle with the power to alter the Earth’s climate and spawn new animal species. A sinister cadre of rogue Pentagon generals wants it and dispatches a corps of murderous cyborgs lead by Col. MacDougall (Kevin Corn), a monstrous child who’s also the product of biological experiments, to capture it. ARCAM is determined to prevent the generals from gaining control of the Ark’s awesome powers. Yu battles his way to victory through car chases, sword fights, shootouts, explosions, knifings, and psychic blasts, with a little help from fellow-Spriggan Jean-Jacques Mondo (Andy McAvin). Director Hirotsugu Kawasaki handles the action sequences more effectively than the minimal character development, and Katsuhiro Otomo’s screenplay doesn’t always make a lot of sense. But Spriggan supplies what hard-core action fans sought in vain in many recent Hollywood blockbusters. Just don’t sit too close to a speaker. MPAA rated R, under 17 not admitted (for considerable violence). –Charles Solomon

ok, maybe the title of the review is a bit over the top. i might not be “sad”, exactly. i am-irritated.

“a reviewer” the name given by a previous reviewer exemplifies the reasons i am “irritated” to be an american. basically, i am a fan of “anime” NOT cartoons. an example of a cartoon to me would be: roughnecks, titan a.e., batman, static shock, etc.

the “negatives” given by “a reviewer” shows that he/she is a fan of “cartoons”. to address them point by point:

    >meaningless dialogue-that comment shows that “a reviewer” does NOT understand how “animation” is used in japan. “anime” is/are movies. big budget/production feature length movies. even in most american produced action movies (which is essentially what spriggan was) there is a dialogue, that rarely ever fits or has meaning. my point, however, is that it is a feature length film not a saturday morning cartoon.

    >hero couldnt die-one word, willing suspension of disbelief. ok that was four but you see the point. furthermore, the character did NOT get shot or blown up. he got shot at and explosions were near him but not on him. this isn’t rare. i suggest that bruce willis’ character in die hard to more damage than this character and let’s not mention the A-Team, Bad Boys, etc. how many american movies do cars explode AND flip and the drivers are ok.

    >drawn out ending-again it is a feature length film. therefore, maybe it is harder, as in most action movies, to wrap everthing up in a saturday morning fashion.

    >bad graphics-if those are bad graphics i’d like to see what you consider “good” graphics. i watch an obscene amount of anime (maybe i shouldnt admitt that, lol) and i can’t think of any american (or any other country besides japan) producing anything better than spriggan.

in conclusion, i think it is our, americans, insistence on everything being “fast/simple” that we lack the ability to appreciate anything that asks us to think or concentrate for more than 20 mins (the standard length of a sit-com/tv show).

First time I have heard about this movie is from my friend who had a demo DVD that had footage from Spriggan. The scene had the main character escaping from the enemy on the streets of Turkey. The way the hero was dodging and kicking butts, it was cool.

So here I am, writing this review for Spriggan. What is Spriggan? They are specially trained elite agents, working for Arcam, a secret organization off to uncover Noah’s Ark. There’s another secret organization which wants to find Noah’s Ark, and use it for their own “evil” purposes.

The action for this movie is cool in a future realistic kind of way. I get so excited when guy A hits guy B, its just cool, the look of it and the sound effects. It’s definitely up there with the action of Ninja Scroll and Samurai X.

The animation is good too, especially when the action starts to take place. Did I mention I like the action in this movie. Don’t get me wrong, the story is good too, but the action, man…. Don’t want to overhype the action or movie itself, so I’ll end it here and let you guys decide if you want to watch it or not. Action.

Anime, Japanese Animation, Japanimation shouldn’t be called cartoons, especially after seeing this amazing movie. It’s action eyecandy! Cartoons are meant to be funny and are kept from dealing with serious issues. Thanks to Spriggan, there’s like CAR CHASES, Foreign locales like Turkey, which actually look like Turkey, Crowds actually move. Glass and tiles shatter from gunshots. Jungle Warfare in the beginning. Watch a building explode realistically. The gunfights, down to the detail of a gun, and watching the tracer fire from bullets. Japanese characters actually look Japanese, Turkish people actually look Turkish down to the clothing.

However, the story is sort of anti-American and anti-WESTERN. The Americans or, rather a group of Mercenary Americans are trying to Conquer the world with NOAH’S ARK, “Who ever controls it is GOD”. Some of the enemies are even code named after the Atomic bombs that were used on Japan. It controls the Earth’s temperature, weather, and animals (it can make Floods anywhere on Earth for example). It has all the animals that ever existed, and can give them life, like the dinosaurs. All in all, it’s a great movie.

This is a pretty good amine film. Like the guy who recommanded it to me. It has a little of Indiana Jones and alot of sci-fi. There is alot of action in this movie. Which keeps it from getting boring. Over all a good buy.
