Case Closed The Movie – The Time Bombed Skyscraper

The city is in the grip of a crazed bomber and nobody is safe as a crushing wave of terror washes over the innocent citizens. Planes, trains, and massive towers all threaten to light up the night sky; the sick whims of a brutal lunatic played out in sudden balls of fire. Conan Edogawa finds himself in a desperate race against the clock, an explosive game of cat and mouse with a deviant madman… and every second counts. Can he unravel the maniacal malcontent’s scheme before the next timer reaches zero? You never know when your time might come. The Time Bombed Skyscraper (1997) was the first of 10 features based on the long-running series Case Closed. The basic premise remains the same: Jimmy Kudo was a famous detective at 17, but thugs gave him a mysterious pill that somehow turned him into a little boy. He changed his name to Conan Edogawa (from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Japanese mystery writer Ranpo Edogawa) and found a home with his former girlfriend Rachel Moore and her half-witted detective father. Time Bombed Skyscraper pits Conan against a serial arsonist and a bomber who threatens to destroy several buildings and a train line in Tokyo. Are there links between the criminals that would escape the eyes of a less extraordinary detective? Handicapped by his pint-sized body, Conan has to pursue the case as best he can, often using Detective Moore and others as stand-ins. The filmmakers stick very close to the TV program and anyone who enjoys the series will enjoy this feature, and vice versa. (Rated TV PG, suitable for ages 10 and older: minor violence and tobacco use)–Charles Solomon

First thing: there is only Japanese or English language.

Instead of “Language: Arabic, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Spanish, Tagalog”

The quality is very very very very…. bad!!!

The Anime is very good. But because of the bad quality this is a worse product I have ever seen.

Most of the “Case Closed” mysteries deal with murder, and some of them merely deal with theft. But “Case Closed The Movie – The Time Bombed Skyscraper” deals with an entirely different kind of criminal — a devious and cruel mastermind who is bombing Conan’s hometown. It’s pretty obvious from the start who the bad guy is, but the elaborate game of cat-and-mouse to find and deal with the bombs is a pretty thrilling storyline.

As people who have seen the TV series known, Jimmy Kudo was a famous and respected teenage detective, until an evil thug force-fed him an experimental poison that shrank him into a little kid. To keep his loved ones safe, he hides his true identity, calls himself Conan Edogawa (after a pair of famed mystery writers) and solves mysteries from the shadows.

After solving a difficult case and going to a tea party held by eminent architect Leo Joel, Conan has a problem that even he can’t solve — Rachel is determined to see a movie with Jimmy (Conan’s true name) on his birthday, and she won’t take no for an answer. But then a far worse problem arises when a strange man calls Jimmy’s phone, and challenges him to find bombs he’s set in the city — one is set near Conan’s not-too-bright little friends, and the other in a crowded public square.

But then the ante is upped when bombs are set somewhere in the local train system, and if any of the trains slow down below a certain speed, they’ll be blown up. Now only the teeny tiny detective can uncover the madman behind these bombings, and the deep-seated obsessions that are driving him… but will he figure it out before the bomber’s last round of explosions causes his biggest bang yet? And even worse, will Rachel blow up with it?

The biggest flaw in “Case Closed The Movie – The Time Bombed Skyscraper” is that it’s pretty obvious early in the movie who the bad guy is gonna be, if not the exact motives and methods. But then, the mystery of whodunnit isn’t the most important part of the plot — it’s more about Conan’s formidable brain working out where the bombs are located and how to stop them from hurting people.

So there are basically a series of little adrenaline-charged chases, crashes and explosions, interspersed by Conan and the others trying to figure out the bomber’s identity and plans — and they get progressively tenser as the story unwinds. The entire drawn-out climax is a surprisingly quiet affair (except for the falling wreckage), but it’s fairly nerve-wracking. The writers also carefully intertwine the current crimes with a past case of Jimmy’s, which seems to have fueled the Bad Guy’s malevolent grudges.

The one infuriating thing: for some reason they decided to erase any references to Japan. Not only are the names Anglicized, but the dialogue is twisted around to make it sound like it’s in America. WHAT?

Jimmy himself is a likable hero, and he’s in good form in this movie — sleight of hand, clever deductions, and a selflessness that drives him to save others from the evil bomber. Jerry Jewell and Alison Viktorin do an excellent dual job as Jimmy’s teenage and first-grade selves. And while Rachel doesn’t do a lot in this movie, she and Jimmy have a rather sweet romantic connection that becomes part of the climax without seeming forced. As for Richard, it’s the usual — he keeps embarrassing himself by accusing all the wrong people.

Rather than stabbings, shootings or strangulations, “Case Closed The Movie – The Time Bombed Skyscraper” focuses on hidden explosives and elusive grudges. It’s a fun little anime thriller.

Bought it as a gift for one of my brothers who love Case Closed. He loves it. It’s basically like a long episode; the story plot was interesting. I enjoyed watching it with him.
