Best Projector : Samsung MBP200 Pico Projector from 2009 CE S ! ——————————————————————————– January 8th 2009 by 2009 CES If you’ve seen one pico projector you’ve seen them all right? That’s what we thought until we had a chance to go hands on with Samsung’s new MBP200 which weighs only 5.6 ounces but can pump out an image as large as 50 inches. What makes this pico unique is that it sports a 2.2-inch LCD so it doubles as a portable audio/video player. Plus not only can you connect your mobile phone or laptop to this mini marvel it accepts microSD cards. We had a chance to play with the MBP200 and the image quality when projecting the movie Madagascar was surprisingly good–although you’ll get the best results with an image size closer to 20 inches. We also found it simple to focus using the built-in control. We’d love to see Samsung bring someting similar to market by the end of the year as it could be a boon to presenters on the go and those who just want to watch video on something larger than a phone’s display. Check out the gallery and stay tuned for a video of these ambitious picos in action.

This is a neat little projector and displays a good quality picture at around 40 inches (Can be larger for a very dark area). HOWEVER, Samsung supply these small cable interfaces that look like thinner versions of a firewire cable but resemble something more like a Samsung mobile phone cable. This causes a problem when trying to connect the projector to anything other than a standard VGA on the PC/laptop. (Samsung supply the cable for this) ………………….as you cannot find the appropriate cable – i.e. you cannot connect the projector to any HDMI, S-Video or Standard video outputs of any other device such as a TV or DVD player!!! I have called Samsung and they are currently trying to find a solution via their technical services department inEgypt!! (yes, another international sweatshop!) The UK website does not carry any information, manuals or PDF documents for the device and after speaking with the Samsung Technical department, they are not familiar with the type of connection cables used on their projector!!. It is not going to be easy to source a HDMI, VGA or Video adapter for this projector without knowing what the name of the other connection end is! (although there are loads of sites selling cable interfaces and adapter – not this one I’M AFRAID!!!!)

My advice would be as follows……the price of the device may come down when it is officially launched in the UK and if the cable solutions are available, then it remains a nifty high quality product with the added bonus of being Excel and Word compatible. The movie conversion was easy and I projected Shrek 2 to a recent holiday group! The ability to use a micro SD card (and have this read off/to the PC via a Micro SD reader)is also good and provided that necessary storage flexibility. There is nothing so portable and impressive than this little projector as long as it can be used across multiple devices that have common interfaces such as Video out ports! (after all, it is meant to be a multi media projector!!). It is also advisable to purchase some mini speakers ( I bought the x- mini speakers which can be daisy chained and provide decent portable sound/bass). Functionality is as reported and the touch screen is very reliable.

If Samsung are able to find a solution to this problem (lets face it, HDMI, S-Video, Standard Video outputs are international connection types!!!), then I will try and update this review accordingly (to 4 stars). Amazon have my email details so other potential customers can contact me via this review. Interestingly enough, Samsung advised me to retort to the Sale of Goods act and report the problem to Amazon who should take some responsibility in ensuring the product is fit for purpose – after all my relationship is with AMAZON and not the SAMSUNG distributor – maybe my next port of call!! Hope this review is useful – LOL, UK
