New, just out of the box, makes a loud grinding noise when a dvd is loaded. DVDs won’t play and hard drive recording appears not to work.

Having gotten tired of lines and other quality problems with VCR tapes, I did a lot of research on digital tuner DVD recorders to replace the remaining VCR machines I own. I had already bought a Panasonic DVD recorder which was superb but had no digital tuner. So based on reviews at Amazon and elsewhere and comparable priced, I purchased the Philips 3576H. No thanks, it is going back.

First, it does not accept DVD-RAM discs. I have developed a preference for the large reuse capability of those discs and other advantages peculiar to DVD-RAMs. Second, the quality of the picture transmitted through the Philips machine was terrible – ghosty and lacking clear edge lines. No amount of fooling with settings or changing of cables or rearranging the Philips to different positions in the chain of machines (other DVDR and VCR) made any difference.

Save your money and wait until Xmas when I am sure Panasonic will come out with an acceptable digital tuner-based DVD recorder. In the meanwhile, Panasonic has a “no tuner” DVD recorder which must be dictated by price but won’t do for me.

Avoid this– what’s the use of a DVD recorder that can’t let you watch one show and record another at the same time? Most of us plan on doing this at regular intervals as show time conflicts occur all the time. Philips basically avoids mentioning this money wasting problem until you reach chapter 2 pg 17 at the bottom, so that you have spent your $$ without getting what you really want and need. When you ask about it, they just sort of throw up their hands too. Spend the few extra $$ and check out the Sony or Pioneer that can actually do what you want and avoid this turkey brand totally.

After having a Panasonic EZ28 DVD recorder w/atsc recorder (which I loved and is really HOT n UP TO DATE) go bad, I searched EVERYWHERE for the Panasonic and EVERYONE (including online retailers like Bestbuy, etc) were out of stock because this is such a HOT little performer & seller.

Unfortuantely, I got suckered into a PHILLIPS DVDR3576H form WALMART ONLINE (their latest version???) and the tuner is VERY slow, the ATSC digital output via HDMI is really blurry and the Phillips upconversion IS HONESTLY WORSE than a $39 progressive scan deck.

First OFF there is NOTHING WRONG with this recorder, so don’t think I got a Phillips ‘lemon’ it’s just their design and out-dated electronics.

This is my second unit because I thought it was bad. The second unit was the same. Compared to real DTV and EVEN my Panasonic baby I just owned, this looks like a BAD COPY of a 480 P screen ALL THE TIME, no matter what the settings are set on.

I KNOW THAT ALL OF YOU WANT A DVD/ATSC with HARDDRIVE unit, but you will be dissappointed with the PHILLIPS outdated technology and terrible and VERY DARK picture output via their HDMI and RCA jacks.

WAIT until later in 2009 and grab a Panasonic or other HDD system that are going to be hitting the shelves later in the year. The newer units will have a better on-board computer and convert at double or tripple the rate.
