- PROPOSAL, THE (DVD MOVIE)
Margaret Tate (Sandra Bullock) terrorizes her publishing house co-workers with her abrasive, take-no-prisoners management style, especially her overworked assistant Andrew Paxton (Ryan Reynolds). But when Margaret is threatened with deportation to her native Canada because of an immigration technicality, the quick-thinking exec announces that she and Andrew are engaged to be married. Ambitious Andrew agrees to go along with her scheme—if there’s a long-awaited promotion in it for him. Everything is going according to Margaret’s plan, until an overzealous immigration official makes it his business to prove that the couple’s engagement is bogus. To demonstrate her commitment to her new fiancé, Margaret agrees to celebrate the 90th birthday of his colorful grandmother (Betty White) — in Alaska. The editrix’s type-A ways put her at odds with her eccentric future in-laws with hilarious consequences, until the Paxtons teach Margaret a thing or two about family.
Rom-com favorite Sandra Bullock and the affably charming Ryan Reynolds’s superb chemistry turn The Proposal from otherwise standard romantic-comedy fare to one that is entertaining and sure to garner laughs. Margaret (Sandra Bullock) is a workaholic, tyrannical book editor (reminiscent of The Devil Wears Prada) who suddenly finds her career in jeopardy as she faces deportation back to Canada. Her solution is to simply fake an engagement to her unsuspecting assistant Andrew (Ryan Reynolds), who in turn blackmails her for a promotion. However, when Margaret is forced to head to Alaska with Andrew to visit his family in an effort to make their story believable to the deportation officers, they soon realize that their plan may not be so simple after all. The supporting cast of Dad (Craig T. Nelson), Mom (Mary Steenburgen), and kooky Grandma (Betty White, still a scene-stealer at 87) is great casting that makes for many amusing scenes. Bottom line: witty Reynolds and Bullock are perfect sparring partners for each other and not half bad to look at either. –Lisanne Chastain

Sandra Bullock is still stuck in 1995 in this uninspired romantic comedy where she goes through all the motions that the genre calls for with little originality.
Betty White makes it all worth it with her scene-stealing turn as a grandmother. She’s always one to watch for.

“The Proposal” tells the story of a guy named Andrew (Ryan Reynolds) who hates his boss Margaret Tate (Sandra Bullock). Margaret is getting deported to Canada, which is where she is originally from. This gets her the idea to all of the sudden at last minute marry Andrew and visit Andrew’s parents and grandma in Alaska. Originally, Margaret and Andrew want to get married and then file for a divorce the next day, but Andrew’s grandmother (Betty White) wants Andrew and Margaret to get married on her 90th birthday.
I saw “The Proposal” when it was in theaters this summer and I basically thought that was the most pointless movie that I have ever seen in my life. I mean, the whole plot, segment and premise was just pointless. Like why do they need a movie where Sandra Bullock wants to marry Ryan Reynolds and basically ruin his life. I mean, that was just the most pointless idea ever made.
Sandra Bullock is a bright actress though she is getting really crappy roles. C’Mon Sandra. Can you do better? I never really cared for Craig T. Nelson in this film. I never even liked Ryan Reynolds as an actor. I also think he is basically a crappy actor to begin with. The one actress that I couldn’t stand in this film was Betty White. I mean, there was nothing funny about her in this movie. All she is doing is getting drunk for 2 hours and looking incredibly stupid. I hate you, Betty, for this. If you’re reading this, I will always hate you.
The Blu-Ray comes with a few special features plus a digital copy on the go. Other than that, I won’t care about the special features, but this review right now is basically just the movie and only the movie itself. This is not what I call an acceptable piece of work. This is the most inexcusable and mindless film that I had ever seen. I mean if the director, Anne Fletcher, wanted to find a way to avoid jumping off a cliff, she basically ruined her chance to avoid it by making this junk. And if Sandra Bullock was so poor, why did she go in to act in a stupid movie like that? I mean, can you make something that will suit audience rather than about a stupid woman who is so mean to her worker that all of the sudden, she just wants to marry him. That’s like saying “I want to stalk and harass someone.” I mean, get a life!
Overall, don’t see “The Proposal.” It’s bascially the worst film of 2009 along with “Terminator Salvation” and “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.” Don’t see it. Avoid it on all costs.

Is it still 1995?
Someone please tell Sandra Bullock it is 2009 and she is about to turn 45. It’s great the film did well for her, but her comedic pratfalls are always predictable and she fails (once again) as a producer. Margaret’s transformation is too black and white. The movie looks and feels cheap. The only thing the film confirms is that this is all that Sandra Bullock is capable of. Sad.
The one thing the film does have is Betty White. I will always love Betty White.

A long, long time ago I swore I would never to see another Sandra Bullock “romantic comedy”. After TWO WEEKS NOTICE, FORCES OF NATURE, MISS CONGENIALITY and so forth I thought enough was enough. Then THE PROPOSAL came along and, asides from a couple of good reviews, I also heard some pretty good word of mouth on it. Too bad, frankly speaking, word of mouth should have kept its mouth shut, THE PROPOSAL is just as bad as anything Bullock has ever done in the past. Then there’s lovable granny who takes Sandra to a strip joint for a never ending private dance and the love birds taking off their clothes (unaware of each other’s presence), walking in reverse and ending up accidentally embracing each other naked in plain daylight (I guess the true odds of that were a bit remote). THE PROPOSAL is for undiscriminating romantic comedy lovers only, others beware !

This is the quintessential chick flick. The primary roles are female. No big deal. The same was mostly true of “A League of Their Own.” But, what’s missing here is anything resembling a male with much testosterone. In addition, the character development and especially the shift in feelings between Bullock and Reynolds is lacking. For women looking for something to watch on a Saturday night “The Proposal” might fit the bill. On the other hand, this movie brings to bare the lyrics to the ballad “Where Have All the Cowboys Gone.” As a guy, my only excuse for watching this movie is that my girlfriend really wanted to see it so I went along with her. That takes care of the chick flicks for a while.
