Fanboys [Blu-ray] Reviews

Studio: Uni Dist Corp (music) Release Date: 07/27/2010 Run time: 90 minutes Rating: Pg13Low on inspiration and laughs, Fanboys is a movie that should have been made years ago. Christopher Marquette plays Eric, a would-be heir to a used-car dealership and former loser who rejects his high-school buddies’ continuing preoccupation with childish things, including George Lucas’ Star Wars saga. When his lifelong friend, Linus (Sam Huntington), is diagnosed in 1999 with a terminal illness, however, Eric joins geeky Windows (Jay Baruchel), wildman Hutch (Dan Fogler) and comely Zoe (Kirsten Bell) on a cross-country trip to steal a print of Star Wars: Phantom Menace from Lucas’ Skywalker Ranch for Eric to have a look. Along the way, of course, sundry disasters and complications await, everything from getting caught in a gay biker bar to a confrontation with a Vegas pimp (Seth Rogen, genuinely funny). The misadventures at Skywalker include a few good moments, especially when the guards look like characters Lucas might have considered for either of the two trilogies. The best comic material concerns hostilities between Star Wars fanatics and Star Trek Trekkers, including a scene set in the Ohio hometown of James Tiberius Kirk. A few good cameos include William Shatner, Carrie Fisher, and Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes. –Tom Keogh

Admitting my bias, I am a big Star Wars fan and had been anxiously waiting the movie release since seeing a preview at ComicCon. The movie did not disappoint and had the family (boys at least) laughing harder than anything else I can remember. Some of the jokes are mature and maybe too vulgar for some. The number of inside references and “for fans only” jokes makes it fun. The guest appearances by Star Wars legends also adds to the experience. The best part is the humor is in support of a story beyond a throw away comedy with a compelling conclusion.

After reading Chris’s review, I realize this film was made for me, not him. If you’re a thirty-something who grew up in the Star Wars era, and if you have a laid-back but wicked sense of humor, you’ll enjoy this film.

Like a cross between Super Troopers and a Kevin Smith movie, you’ll recognize cameos, cringe a little at the awkward positions the characters end up in, and probably have friends very similar to one or more characters in this move.

It’s not for people who take their fandom too seriously, or for people who are too “above it all” for fandom *cough*cough*. But it was for me, and I had fun watching it!

This movie was hilarious. I was only able to see it 4 times in the theater as it wasnt around long. I just hope it doesn’t take so long to get the dvd! One of my favorite scenes was when the boys needed to be rescued by their fanfriend. The sound effects were from the real thing.
