Behind the Mask – The Rise of Leslie Vernon

You know legendary maniacs Jason Voorhees, Michael Myers and Freddy Krueger. Now meet Leslie Vernon, the next great psycho-slasher. Nathan Baesel of INVASION stars as Vernon, a good-natured killing machine who invites a documentary film crew to follow him as he reminisces with his murder mentor (Scott Wilson of IN COLD BLOOD), evades his psychiatrist/nemesis (Robert Englund of A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET), deconstructs Freudian symbolism, and meticulously plots his upcoming slaughter spree. But when the actual carnage begins, where do you draw the line between voyeuristic thrills, mythic evil, and good old- fashioned slasher movie mayhem? Angela Goethals (24) and Zelda Rubinstein (POLTERGEIST) co-stars in this ingeniously twisted and awardwinning shocker that Film Threat hails as “a masterpiece…”.If Christopher Guest turned his satiric eye to the horror genre, the end result might be something like Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon. An amusing and affectionate nod to slasher-movie franchises like Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street, Behind the Mask purports to exist in a world where Freddy, Jason, and Michael Myers are not just movie icons but real individuals–and a huge influence on aspiring maniac Leslie Vernon (Nathan Baesel). The epitome of the “nice young man” turned homicidal maniac, Leslie is also possessed with a working knowledge of horror movie conventions and stereotypes, and bends them to his advantage as he stalks his prey. Writer-director Scott Glosserman’s enthusiasm for the subject matter is palpable, even if his gags don’t always work, and there are tongue-in-cheek cameos from Robert Englund (channeling Donald Pleasance in Halloween), Zelda Rubenstein (Poltergeist), and a particularly funny Scott Wilson as Leslie’s serial killer mentor. Extras include several deleted and extended scenes (which can be viewed with Glosserman’s commentary), behind-the-scenes featurettes on the film’s production and casting, and commentary from Baesel and other cast members. The original script can also be accessed via DVD-ROM. — Paul Gaita

I CAN’T UNDERSTAND THE LOTS OF GOOD REVIEWS AND PRIZES THAT THIS ‘PRODUCT’ SEEMINGLY HAS BEEN ACHIEVING. BECAUSE FOR ME IT’S JUST THAT, A INMENSELY BORING, PATHETIC AND INSULSE PRODUCT THAT DOESEN’T EVEN DESERVE TO BE CALLED ‘A FILM’. THE FIRST 60′ MINUTES ARE THE MOST ABSURD THING I’VE EVER SEEN. AN ENNERVING AND STUPID SUPPOSED ‘SERIAL KILLER’ IS THE OBJECT OF A FALSE DOCUMENTARY THAT DOESEN’T SEEM TO GO ANYWHERE AT ALL. AND THE REMAINING 30′ MINUTES ARE THE DUMBEST REFERENCE TO A FRIDAY, THE 13TH MOVIE SERIES THAT YOU COULD EVER IMAGINE.

AND ALL THE SUPPOSEDLY FREUDIAN REFERENCES AND SYMBOLIC ANALYSYS OF THE SLASHER GENRE ARE ABSOLUTELY RIDICOLOUS AND EVEN DO WORST THE EXPIERENCE OF SEEING IT.

IF YOU ARE A FAN OF THIS KIND OF MOVIES LIKE I AM, YOU CAN’T DO A FLICK THAT ISN’T EVEN SCARY, FUNNY… NOT EVEN SEXY AT ALL. IF YOU WANT TO SEE A TRASHY BUT FUN MOVIE ABOUT THIS GENRE OF MOVIES, I’VE RECOMMEND YOU ‘CAMP SLAUGHTER’. IS NOT A GOOD MOVIE, BUT AT LEAST HAVE INSIDE ALL THE COMMON REFERENCES TO THIS KIND OF FILMS, AND IT’S QUITE MORE ENTERTAINING THAN THIS.

OR EVEN BETTER, GO TO THE ORIGINAL MATERIAL. BECAUSE ANY OF THE BADDEST SEQUELS OF FRIDAY THE 13TH, HALLOWEEN OR A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET SERIES ARE FAR BETTER THAN THIS TITLE. IN MY OPINION THIS MOVIE USES ALL THIS MODERN CLASSICS TO ACHIEVE AN ATTENTION THAT DOESN’T DESERVE AT ALL.

AND I CAN’T AGREE WITH THE GOOD REVIEWS TO THE LEAD ACTOR. I DIDN’T KNOW HIM AT ALL, BUT FROM NOW ON, I THINK I’M GOING TO AVOID HIM LIKE POISON, SAME FOR THE DIRECTOR. I CAN’T IMAGINE HOW HE COULD CONVINCE TO ACTORS LIKE SCOTT WILSON, ROBERT ENGLUND OR ZELDA RUBINSTEIN AGREEID TO APPEAR ON THIS DISASTER. MY REVIEW IS ”’0”’ STARS, BUT THE AMAZON SYSTEM FORCES ME TO GIVE IT ONE.

This movie is like a slap in the face to all good slasher movies.the first boring half of the movie is like a documentary on how to be a killer and the steps you have to take like planning.the second still boring part turns the film into a real slasher but there are no good blood and gore effects, the mask the killer uses is just plain dumb looking, there is a soft core sex scene but no nudity.all in all avoid this movie or just rent it for something to laugh at.dont take to serious but either way youll be disapointed with this movie.as a matter of fact the trailer was far better then the movie itself.

How this movie got anything above a 1 star, and that 1 star is ONLY because there were a few slightly amusing parts to it, thanks only to the guy playing the up and coming serial killer. Otherwise this movie wanted to make me strangle myself for requesting it from netflix. What a complete waste of time.
