    While it may not rank with Richard Kimble’s fateful meeting with the One-Armed Man in the series finale of The Fugitive, Caine’s reunion with his long-lost brother, Danny, brings Kung Fu, to quote the title of the four-episode story arc’s conclusion, “Full Circle.” The series’ rich iconography and episodes featuring returning characters may make this final season heady going for newcomers. But those who have faithfully followed Caine (David Carradine in his iconic role) on his nomadic adventures will be richly rewarded with some of the series’ best episodes. The season begins with a stellar two-parter, “Blood of the Dragon,” in which Caine seeks the truth about his grandfather’s murder, while Imperial assassins are dispatched to kill Caine. The venerable Patricia Neal guest-stars as the grandfather’s iron-willed, cold-hearted former lover. Eddie Albert also stars as a doctor who sides with Caine. Other memorable guest stars this season include William Shatner broguing it up, Scotty-style, as a sea captain who arrives with an Imperial pardon for Caine (but at what cost?) in “A Small Beheading.” Barbara Hershey portrays an aspiring Shoalin priest in the two-parter, “Besieged.” In “The Brothers Caine,” a pre-Airplane Leslie Nielsen is a ruthless magnate who puts a $10,000 price on Danny’s head, making for an awkward reunion when Danny thinks that Caine is a bounty hunter.     This season was distinguished by innovative episodes set in China during Caine’s “Grasshopper” tutelage. In “The Demon God,” the youth, poisoned by a prince, experiences mystical visions of his older, wandering self, who is stung by a scorpion. In “The Thief of Chendo,” young Caine’s Master imagines an adventure for the aspiring priest. Two Carradine commentaries, and a near-hour long chronicle of Carradine’s 30-years-on visit to a Shoalin monastery in China (an incredible journey that ends with Carradine’s soulful rendition of “America the Beautiful”) help to give Kung Fu a worthy DVD send-off. –Donald Liebenson

Johnny Depp, blase and whimsical, plays a CIA agent who’s drawn guitar-playing gun-slinger Antonio Banderas (long black hair flopping over his face like the ears of a Labrador puppy) into a ridiculously convoluted plot to overthrow the Mexican government. Along for the ride are a craggy-faced rogue’s gallery including Willem Dafoe, Mickey Rourke, Danny Trejo, Ruben Blades, and (to balance things out) the smooth, tantalizing complexions of Eva Mendes and Salma Hayek. For sheer trashy fun, Once Upon a Time in Mexico is a step down from its predecessor, Desperado–but Desperado set the bar pretty high.     Clint Eastwood (the Man with No Name) is good, Lee Van Cleef (Angel Eyes Sentenza) is bad, and Eli Wallach (Tuco Benedito Pacifico Juan Maria Ramirez) is ugly in the final chapter of Sergio Leone’s trilogy of spaghetti westerns (the first two were A Fistful of Dollars and For a Few Dollars More). In this sweeping film, the characters form treacherous alliances in a ruthless quest for Confederate gold. Leone is sometimes underrated as a director, but the excellent resolution on this digital video disc should enhance appreciation of his considerable photographic talent and gorgeous widescreen compositions. Ennio Morricone’s jokey score is justifiably famous.

Now in their middle years, they also struggle with their personal lives, Gus with Clara Forsythe, the love of his life, and Call with Maggie Tilton, the young prostitute who loves him. Meanwhile their partners-in-arms Deets, Jake Spoon and Pea Eye Parker help the Rangers protect the advancing western frontier from the defiant Comanches who are determined to defend their land and way of life. Prequel to Lonesome Dove, and based upon the novel by Larry McMurty.It’s billed as “the second chapter in the Lonesome Dove saga,” but Comanche Moon is actually a prequel to that much-loved 1989 miniseries. And while there’s no doubt that it has some very big boots to fill, this three-part (on two DVDs, including bonus features) production is rarely less than eminently watchable and entertaining. Continuity is a positive factor: Larry McMurtry, who wrote the novel on which it’s based, also co-wrote the screenplay, and Lonesome Dove director Simon Wincer returns as well. As for the cast, it’s certainly not as star-studded as its predecessor, but Steve Zahn (as Gus McCrae), Karl Urban (Woodrow Call), Linda Cardellini (Clara Allen), and the others manage to suggest the characterizations brought to the screen by Robert Duvall, Tommy Lee Jones, and Anjelica Huston, respectively, without mimicking them. Of course, there are new faces on hand as well, principally Val Kilmer (looking a mite chubby, perhaps due to all the scenery he chews in his portrayal of Texas Rangers Captain Inish Scull) and Rachel Griffiths (as Scull’s horny wife).

    As the tale begins in 1858, Call and McCrae, some years away from becoming the cattlemen depicted in Lonesome Dove, are Rangers serving under the educated and eccentric Scull as they work to protect the territory against marauding Comanches, led by the stern, vengeful Buffalo Hump (Wes Studi) and his crazed son, Blue Duck (Adam Beach). When Scull’s horse is stolen by one of the Indians, he sets out to retrieve the beast, promoting both Call and McRae to Captain, and the rest of the story revolves primarily around them; in fact, although there’s a reasonable amount of action (including the Comanche raid on Austin that opens Part Two), Comanche Moon is much less plot-dependent than character-driven, and it is Call (tough, taciturn, and totally clueless when it comes to the fair sex) and best friend McRae (an open-hearted, self-described jester) who are the most engaging of the bunch as they navigate the deep waters of their work and love lives (McRae with Clara and Call with the prostitute Maggie Tilton, played by Elizabeth Banks). McMurtry and co-writer Diana Ossana’s dialogue manages to be at once plain and poetic, colorful and poignant, and regardless of what’s actually happening onscreen, the miniseries has a light, often whimsical charm that separates it from most Westerns made for big and small screen alike.
