But in a bigger way, it measures the life cycle itself, from birth to adulthood, from childhood’s freedom to grown-up responsibility. All of this is rendered in cheeky, fleet-footed style–the movie doesn’t lecture, or make you feel you’re being fed something that’s good for you. The animation is miraculous, a lush forest in which nature is a constantly unfolding miracle (even in a spectacular fire, or those dark moments when “man was in the forest”). There are probably easier animals to draw than a young deer, and the Disney animators set themselves a challenge with Bambi’s wobbly glide across an ice-covered lake, his spindly legs akimbo; but the sequence is effortless and charming. If Bambi himself is just a bit dull–such is the fate of an Everydeer–his rabbit sidekick Thumper and a skunk named Flower more than make up for it. Many of the early Disney features have their share of lyrical moments and universal truths, but Bambi is so simple, so pure, it’s almost transparent. But the man hasn’t lost all hope. “Happy endings may get a bad rap, but they do happen,” he assures his daughter. “And when they do, they’re just as true as the unhappy ones.” One can’t help but hope Hank finds his happy ending, because it’s with his family that his soft side surfaces. Hank takes no shame in trying to woo back his “wife” Karen, even if it is in front of her new fiancé. He knows he’s meant to be with her–plain and simple–and there’s a glint in her eye that always makes you wonder if she’s really thinking the same thing. And his daughter Becca? Well, any guy would melt against this guitar-wielding cutie (played by the adorable Madeleine Martin), but Hank really captures the “I’ll kick a lot of ass for my daughter” mentality that so many dads harbor. He’s also fully prepared to drop a gorgeous woman at a moment’s notice to heed his daughter’s call.

The rest of the cast, including Evan Handler (Sex and the City) and Pamela Adlon (Lucky Louie), provide some surprisingly interesting and hilarious side stories. Just when it seems situations in this show can’t get any more ludicrous or disgusting, they most certainly do. That’s the beauty of it. Californication is a dark, coarse, edgy adult comedy. In 1995, it was promising to hear that Mel Brooks was creating “the companion piece to Young Frankenstein.” He had also brought in the heavyweight of deadpan–Leslie Nielsen. As Lt. Frank Drebin in the Police Squad movies, Nielsen has no peer for silly stuff–just the player Brooks would seem to need for a strong movie, as any fan of Brooks perpetually hopes a new film may rekindle his madcap magic. Alas, the end results in Dracula: Dead and Loving It include a sprinkling of amusements and one big belly laugh. Brooks and his writers use a very tight adaptation of Bram Stoker’s novel, but the spoofs can be spelled out as we go, as if they are paint-by-number. Some are jabs at Coppola’s version of Dracula, but most are attached to classic Dracula films. If any real pleasure comes from the movie it’s thanks to the efforts of the cast. Peter MacNicol plays the crazed Renfield to the letter, Steven Weber has a good time as the tight British Harkin, and Lysette Anthony charms as the doomed Lucy. Brooks and Nielsen ham it up just fine. There’s even a surprisingly controlled performance by Harvey Korman (a character spoofing Anthony Hopkins’s role in the misfire The Road to Wellville). As with Brooks’s period comedies, the film looks better than it needs to and includes a few tricky special effects for good measure. This has nothing to do with the audience laughing–we need bigger jokes. And when you double over laughing in one scene–involving a stake through the heart and a bucket of blood–you want the movie to achieve Brooks’s days of glory, when hearty laughter was the norm, not an isolated moment. –Doug Thomas

Following the same “mockumentary” format of Spinal Tap and Guffman, Best in Show takes in some of the dog show officials, the manager of a nearby hotel that allows dogs to stay there, and the commentators of the competition (a particularly knockout comic turn by Fred Willard as an oafish announcer). The movie manages to paint an affectionate portrait of its quirky characters without ever losing sight of the ridiculousness of their obsessive world. Almost all of the scenes were created through improvisation. While lacking the overall focus of a written script, Best in Show captures hilarious and absurd aspects of human behavior that could never be written down. For the uninitiated: “He’s not the chosen one / Not the hero of his race / He’s just a wrong man at the wrong time in the wrong place.” The oratorio’s best bits are lifted from the film, particularly “What Have the Romans Ever Done for Us,” “The People’s Front of Judea,” and “Individuals,” in which Brian tries to persuade his eager would-be followers that he is not the Messiah. Some of the jokes are inspired (“Is it A.D. yet?” “About a quarter to”). Others are nudge-nudge, say-no-more groan-worthy (“She was great with child / And not too bad without”). Not the Messiah is an easy-to-Handel mad mash-up of musical styles, including gospel, Gilbert & Sullivan, doo-wop, and Bob Dylan. In their fleeting bits, fellow Pythons Terry Jones, Michael Palin, and Terry Gilliam (as well as the ever-ravishing Carol Cleveland) are given rock star welcomes. This lavish 2009 live performance at London’s venerable Royal Albert Hall commemorating Python‘s 40th anniversary, and featuring the not-at-all-shabby BBC Symphony and Chorus, may not have the kick or star power of Spamalot, but it is funny enough, at times lovely enough, and above all, silly enough to take its rightful place at the Python Round Table. –Donald Liebenson

Robert Klein moderates Live at Aspen, the irreverent 1998 U.S. Comedy Arts Festival tribute that reunited John Cleese, Eric Idle, Michael Palin, Terry Gilliam, and Terry Jones onstage for the first time in 18 years on the occasion of the troupe’s 30th anniversary. The male consciousness, in all its neurotic, demanding, self-deluding glory, runs amok in Bored to Death, an unusual and charming sitcom from HBO. Jonathan Ames (Jason Schwartzman, Rushmore) is supposed to be working on his second novel, but instead he places an ad on the Internet, offering his services as an unlicensed detective. The promise of reasonable rates draws in cases: a kidnapped sister; an unfaithful boyfriend; a blackmailing one-night stand; a stolen skateboard; a long-lost love. His investigations are sometimes helped, sometimes hindered by his best friend Ray (Zach Galifianakis, The Hangover), a sexually frustrated cartoonist, and his boss George (Ted Danson, Cheers), a successful editor who’s questioning the value of his career. Bored to Death is steeped in literary slacker quirkiness–hardly surprising, given that it’s created by comic writer Jonathan Ames (whose novel The Extra Man is being turned into a movie), who’s named the main character after himself. But while the show has a bit of a shaggy dog quality, it’s more endearing than arty or precious. Schwartzman’s nebbishy intelligence fits his role perfectly, and both Galifianakis and Danson have a field day with the contrasting narcissisms of their characters. The female characters aren’t so well drawn, despite the presence of such engaging actresses as Olivia Thirlby, Kristen Wiig, Parker Posey, Bebe Neuwirth, and others. (Male guest stars include Patton Oswalt and Jim Jarmusch, which is about as hip and New York as you can get.) While male self-obsession can be intolerable in real life, as a subject for comedy it’s rich material. –Bret Fetzer
