Ocean’s Thirteen
  • It’s bolder. Riskier. The most dazzling heist yet. George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon and more reteam with director Steven Soderbergh for a split-second caper that stacks the deck with wit, style and cool. Danny Ocean again runs the game, so no rough stuff. No one gets hurt. Except for double-crossing Vegas kingpin Willy Bank (Al Pacino). Ocean’s crew will hit him where it hurts: in his wallet.

On opening night of Bank’s posh new casino tower The Bank, every turn of a card and roll of the dice will come up a winner for bettors. And they’ll hit him in his pride, making sure the tower doesn’t receive a coveted Five Diamond Award. That’s just the start of the flimflams. The boys are out to break The Bank. Place your bets!

George Clooney is one, Brad Pitt is two, Matt Damon three… well, let’s just assume there are 13 collaborators in this installment of Steven Soderbergh’s profitable caper franchise. We’re back in Las Vegas for Ocean’s Thirteen, where the boys plot to shut down the brand-new venture of a backstabbing hotelier (Al Pacino) because the guy double-crossed the now-ailing Reuben (Elliott Gould). If you look at the plot too closely, the entire edifice collapses (hey, how about those Chunnel-digging giant drills?), but Soderbergh conjures up a visual style that swings like Bobby Darin at the Copa. Other than the movie-star dazzle, the main reason to see the film is Soderbergh’s uncanny feel for how the widescreen frame can float through the neon spaces of Vegas or sort through groups of characters sitting in hotel rooms talking (he shot the film himself, under his pseudonym Peter Andrews).

The film doesn’t give enough time to goofballs Casey Affleck and Scott Caan (whose riffs made Ocean’s Twelve worth seeing), although it provides comic stuff for a fun roster of actors, including Eddie Izzard, David Paymer, and Bob (“Super Dave”) Einstein. Meanwhile, Ellen Barkin makes a fetching assistant for Pacino, and Pacino himself, his hair dyed Trumpian orange, is content to gnaw on some ham for the duration. Biggest puzzle about the two sequels is why George Clooney seems content to retreat from centerstage. Still, his Hemingwayesque conversations with Pitt are an amusing form of male shorthand, and even as the movie overstays its welcome during a long finale, Clooney’s easy sense of cool makes it all seem acceptable. –Robert Horton

This is the quintessential example of Hollywood greed. If you actually thought Ocean’s 11 was a decent remake, you can’t buy it. You’ve got to pay for the horrific remakes done twice where this famous 21st century brat pack of actors were paid a ransom to have a blast and horse around without a script and take advantage of a franchise name. Perhaps the worst trilogy around, you have to have rocks in your head to want to pay over $50 for the “privilege” of owning all three. Wait a few weeks for this to be in the clearance rack and pick it up for few quarters. Shame on the studios and may you take a beating on this disgraceful attempt to capitalize on your monopoly.

    1)Bought the video rental

2)13mins into it, the color gets all messed up suddenly

3)I shutdown and restart unbox, and the video mysteriously disappeared from the play list. All attempts to find/import failed.

4)Now i need to pay again to view it.

Unbox is junk, use netflix instant viewing instead, it’s FREE, has most of the good tv shows(heroes, 30rock, etc..) and works flawlessly.

The single star is not a review of the movie, but to agree with other reviews that object to Combo releases. I question there is a real market for Combo releases and see this as a means to charge higher prices for the most popular movies. I refuse to buy any Combo releases for the higher $$$ and urge other buyers to do as well. We need to send a message or we will see everything released in Combo adding up to 40% to the price!!! The arguments made for Combos are that (1) you can also play it on standard DVD players and (2) it “future” protects us in case the HD DVD format becomes obsolete. For (1), there may be some interest in this but for me I didn’t buy an HD DVD player to watch movies on a standard DVD player. For (2) frankly, I’ll take my chances because if HD DVD becomes obsolete, existing players will last for quite a while and combo players will be available. Also, I can afford to buy into Blu-Ray or any other new technology with the money I saved not buying Combos (I wouldn’t take a step backward to DVD). If the studios think there is a market for Combos, fine! -> Just release a HD DVD only version also at the same time. See how many they sell of each. Frankly, I only moved up to HD DVD when I saw Amazon pricing them comparable to DVD. If you don’t think there is a strategy on the part of the studios using Combos to generate more revenue just look at the upcoming releases of White Noise (HD DVD only) and White Noise 2 (Combo). What sense does that make other than to create interest with the first movie and then sock it to you on the second! Look at this and other series (Bourne, Harry Potter, Oceans 11-13, etc.) same pattern. If they truly want the launch of HD DVD to be successful (as I do!), Combos pricing is very counterproductive. Annoyed and frustrated.

“Ocean’s Thirteen” is excellent! The star-studded cast led by George Clooney (as Danny Ocean) is excellent. The directing and cinematography by Steven Soderbergh (who also did the directing and cinematography to the first two Ocean’s films) is excellent. The story and screenplay by Brian Koppelman & David Levien (who also did the story and screenplay to “Rounders” (1998) is excellent. The music by David Holmes (who also did the music to the first two Ocean’s films) is excellent. The film editing by Stephen Mirrione (who also did the film editing to the first two Ocean’s films) is excellent. The casting by Debra Zane (who also did the casting to the first two Ocean’s films) is excellent. The production design by Philip Messina (who also did the production design to the first two Ocean’s films) is excellent. The art direction by Tony Fanning (who also did the art direction to “Ocean’s Twelve” (2004) & Doug J. Meerdink (who also did the art direction to “The Good German” (2006) is excellent. The set decoration by Kristen Toscano Messina (who also did the set decoration to the first two Ocean’s films) is excellent. The costume design by Louise Frogley (who also did the costume design to “The Good German” (2006) is excellent. This is an interesting caper film that surpasses “Ocean’s Twelve” and comes close to surpassing “Ocean’s Eleven” (2001).
