Tom Selleck is Jesse Stone, a former L.A. homicide detective who left behind the big city and an ex-wife to become the police chief of the quiet New England fishing town of Paradise, Massachusetts. Stone’s old habits die hard as he continues to indulge in his two favorite things – scotch and women. When a series of murders take place, and a high school girl is raped, he’s forced to face his own demons in order to solve the crimes.

I liked the premise and thought the movie started good. It really captured the feel and vibe of a man starting over with his dog…and bottle. Like a reviewer said, the pace slowed so much I became conscious of it…and that’s bad news for a film, especially one on TV. With commercials interrupting the pace, it worsened.
Then there was plot holes too big to accept. This could have been a good movie, but the script was weak and the writing too TV movie-like. This proves a significant point…no matter how technology advances, it ALL start with writing. Then you have to have the director to deliver the script.
Selleck did his part.
I was slightly embarrassed for him towards the end. He deserves a new launch of success and finding that next Magnum character is his call. His appeal just didn’t cross over to film…too bad. He made some decent flicks, but Selleck was made for TV. He needs his Texas Walker Ranger…and there should be a great team working on this before he misses his last years of his prime.

There’s a lot done right in this movie. It’s a cat-and-mouse murder mystery, a little romantic, and high on the “good father” scale, at least in the sense of being properly fatherly. It’s also a Tom Selleck movie. Selleck is no longer a young stud – neither particularly young, nor particularly studly. That describes lots of perfectly good people. Selleck plays a character that matches his appearance, and still gets some romantic interest anyway.
The plot is straightforward. There are two crimes, the first a murder that becomes a series of murders. The other is the gang-rape of a teenage girl. This is a low-brain-power movie, so both crimes are solved and the criminals brought to justice, or something like it. I won’t give any spoilers, but I wish the rape were resolved a bit more forcefully. Selleck’s character is good, or good enough. The problem is in the script. But this is a popcorn movie, not the place for heavy topics, and not a vehicle for wild heroics. And the bad guys don’t always get the bad they deserve in real life, either.
It’s good, lightweight entertainment. If you want to kill an evening, this should so the job – or at least leave it comatose.

I had seen this before. It wasn’t as good the second time around. I do whoever like Tom Selleck. The second time around seemed to move slow.

I am a strong fan of Tom Selleck. He is a very good actor as far as I am concerened but this role is not all that well played. He seems to be too much of a drinker for me. I do however like that he stands on what he beleives is right.Selleck has done a bang up job on his westerns and I would hope he could do better on these movies that have so little action.

Jesse Stone: Stone Cold
Can Selleck make this character any better? Worth the watch.
